Hi all,
Do any of you know how many applicants apply for the MD/PhD program each year? Since for most schools MD/PhD is around 10% of the entering class, does that correlates to 10% of application--about 3000. Thanks.

PS> thought this forum was a little dead and could use a boost, but I guess everyone is working on secondaries 😉

It's much less than 10%. While most programs have MD/PhD programs, the sizes of the majority of them are very small, like 2 people per year. The MSTPs generally take from 6 - 12, with a couple schools that take more than that.

I'd say if one does the math it'll come out around 500 or so per year across all MD/PhD programs. I wonder if anyone knows for sure?

neuronix,

i think the OP is asking # of applicants. Are you suggesting totally only 500 applicants?

I honestly have no idea how many applicants there are. I'm tempted to believe it is more then 10%, ie, more then 3000. I think a lot of people apply mstp, but don't get in. After all, mstp is supposed to be more difficult to gain addmission to then MD.

I heard the exact opposite. MSTP students are "generally" extremely well qualified students and I've heard they have the highest medical school acceptance rate than any other "group" of students appying.

I read somewhere (don't remember where, sorry) that MSTP programs have about 800 applicants nationwide and 400 slots. So the admit rate would be 50%, "easier" than med school on the surface, but of course much more difficult in fact due to self-selection.
Ciao,

i think i ran across a figure somewhere during this application process that suggested an expected 700 applicants...

Each "big" MSTP program gets about 400 applicants.

Nationwide, nobody knows. I would guess that nationwide the average acceptance rate for MSTP is somewhere around 40-50%

For regular MD programs its about 50% too.

Here's the breakdown on a percentage basis:

MD/PhD vs MD at state school: MD/PhD is harder
MD/PhD vs MD at elite private school: MD is harder

From a numbers (MCAT/GPA) basis, MD/PhD is ALOT harder to get in than regular MD admissions
