Everybody,

Well, I took the test today and wanted to thank everyone on the board for all of their studying and test taking tips. I'm very happy with my results and am even more excited about being done with it!!!

So here's my results:

Section Score Percentile
AA 23 99.3
PAT 20 95.5
QR 21 93.5
RC 27 99.8 😀
Bio 22 98.7
GC 21 92.4
OC 23 97.1
TS 22 98.2

Because I found everyone elses tips very usefull I thought I would post some of my tips and impressions"

Studying:

I used the ?Big Blue? Kaplan book for most of my studying, only using old textbooks if there was a concept I didn?t remember well.

For practice problems I used the Kaplan book and CD-ROM that comes with it as well as Topscore (a great CD-ROM from Scholarware).

Because I needed to refresh myself on a lot of the topics I ended up studying about a month with a very relaxed schedule (1-2 hours every other day) during spring quarter and then about three weeks of ?hardcore? (6 plus hours every day) right before the test. I did not take the $1000 Kaplan course and do NOT think that it is necessary to do well.

In General

The questions are not difficult, the important thing is to be very familiar with the format because it can be nerve-racking once you get in front of the computer screen. Topscore was very similar to the DAT and I highly recommend it.

At the Test

When I got to the test I moved the keyboard to the side so that I had plenty of workspace and then I opted to take the 30 min tutorial of the test (it just shows you the format, etc). During this time I wrote out all of the Math and Gen Chem formulas that I would need later on a piece of scratch paper, took a few deep breaths and then clicked through the 15 or so pages of the tutorial and jumped right in to the Science section.

Biology:
Most of the questions were very straightforward and were covered by the Kaplan book quite well. My test did seem to focus more heavily on Genetics, Ecology and Evolution then Kaplan does, but they were pretty straightforward (I also had recently taken upper division Macroevolution, Animal Ecology and Genetics ? so maybe I?m biased). Expect a few specific questions ? but you should be able to at least make an educated guess. I was surprised to have no questions on photosynthesis, but all of the other topics were covered pretty evenly. (Hint for Genetics ? read the question carefully ? are they asking for phenotypic or genotypic ratio?)

General Chem:
This is not my strongest science ? it?s been so long since freshman year! ? but I thought it was very straightforward ? very similar to topscore, if not a little easier.

O Chem:
Probably the easiest of the science sections. The section focuses heavily on SN2/SN1 E2/E1, with the rest of the questions pretty much being the reactions covered in Kaplan.

PAT:
Totally doable if you practice. I was using Topscore and consistently getting 23?s. So I guess expect your score to drop about 3 points. I didn?t think the angles were as bad as everybody says, but I swear that some of the answers for Pattern Folding were identical (anyone else get the ?beach ball? one ? 2 were the same!). Watch your time on this section.

Break
I went and ate a Luna Bar and a few ozs of water. I need food to think so not eating wasn?t an option.

Reading Comprehension:
Apparently eating helped because I thought this section was a piece of cake. Maybe I just got easy sections: Genetics of Cancer, Stock Market, and Para/Sympathetic Nervous System. The method I used was to read the first question and then dive into the passage answering questions as I went. But since the third passage was so long I really just searched for the answers. I had about 10 min left at the end to check my answers. I recommend trying out a few different methods when you practice and get comfortable with one. I can kind of ?visualize? the passage after skimming it for a few minutes so I found no need to take notes.

Math (QR):
Exactly like Topscore. I would recommend reading and working through the online GRE guide to their Math section (but add the Kaplan trig stuff and forget about the graphs at the end). Just practice doing the problems fast ? you will see the same ones ( ie ?Sara has 20 coins that add up to 75 cents, if she only has nickels and dimes?.). I made it through all of the problems but would have liked to have more time.

So that?s it. Piece of cake right?

Again thanks to all of the previous posters. Feel free to ask me any questions while everything is still fresh in my mind.

Oh and in case you're wondering:
I go to UCSB
4.09/4.15 total/science GPA (with+/-)
hoping to get into: UCLA UCSF UOP (california resident) but have some back ups just in case.

Thanks again, good luck to everyone taking it in August!
Time to go relax and have a drink!
Jessica

Nice post, Jess.

I also think that the $1000 Kaplan course is not necessary, even though I think the Kaplan subject tests are very good. All too often people try to throw money at the solution, when what is really required is a little bit of hard work.

HBomb.

wowser....thats some awesome stats and DAT scores. when you say u might be biased because you have taken, Macroevolution, Animal Ecology and Genetics. i think you might be biased because of your background. you have no problem getting in to any school. with those stats, during the interview you probably can ask them, "why do they want you at their school" rather than they asking you that... nice job

Thanks to everyone for the congrats, it really makes me feel hopeful about admissions. I have been anticipating and dreading this day for such a long time. All of the hard work really does pay off.

It's time for some fun now!
And then back to working on secondaries... it really is neverending, huh?

Best of Luck to Everyone!

Awesome job!! You've obviusly pulled your weight in school (I know UCSB is rather competitive) and did really well on the DAT. I think you will have absolutely no problem with any of the California schools you have listed. I'll still wish you luck, even though you don't need it! 🙂

The one that had identical alternating patterns of black and white? Yes, I had that question too and noticed it right away! I thought I was the only one.

Congrats Jess! Wow! I wish I was in your boat right now! My test is in three days, and I have read the Kaplan Blue Book from front to back two full times in the past week....Yikes! I am so nervous!
Any last minute tips from such a great testtaker?
Once again-congrats, and I am sure you will be a shoe-in everywhere!

Jess,

Congrats. I work for ScholarWare part-time and am 3rd year dental student.

I hope you realize your dreams. Remember to follow the advice on the CD under the Start Menu "7 Things You Need To Know To Get In."

Another last minute tip:

Listen to people when they tell you to stop studying by 4 pm on the day before the test. I couldn't stop myself from looking up little facts all night and it was really getting me jumpy and nervous - and of course none of that stuff came up or even stuck with me. Just relax and trust yourself. Good Luck on your test fleisch! 😀

good job, I am taking my test in approximately one month and hope to get over 20 in every section...you will get into the school of your choice...

Your plug is rather tactless. Why don't you change your screen name, and offer up a real congratulatory remark instead of plugging your company? Have you no shame?

Here are my "7 Things You Need To Know About Scholarware":
7. They have an evident need for writing self-serving posts
6. Scroll wheel works on Top Score, but it won't work on the DAT
5. Actual PAT is harder than on Top Score
4. There are no explanations to answers
3. It's only good for 6 months
2. For the most part, it's hard to reach their customer service department
1. There are mistakes and typos

Hey Hbomb,

We are here not in disguise. Don't be so rude. When you are a dental student, as I am, you may actually understand what it's like to get in and may have some actual good advice about "things you should know", until then...

And our congrats to you also when and if that happens.

Jason

Yeah, you're right. I was being rude. Also, I can admit and have previously posted, TopScore is a good tool.

But I still think you pimping your product is not a good thing. Why don't you list out those 7 things instead of ask us to look it up in your product (meaning the users readers here would actually have to buy your product...meaning your remark isn't too useful without us spending money on your product). I actually tried looking the list up to see exactly what it said, so I could judge the usefulness myself, but my copy expired...go figure, so for now I won't judge the list's usefulness.

What I'm trying to get at here about changing your screen name is that if you wanted to be really helpful, as a student and contributor on Student Doctor Network, you would come in as a poster without an agenda, without your corporate badge and help us out here, give us some real insight instead of pointing us to your revenue generating product. We need real information, not just some blanket statement saying you need to read these 7 things (i.e. buy my product) in order to get into dental school. List the 7 things, if you really want to be helpful. Otherwise, you're just trying to sell your product.

Also, I happen to think I add some value in this forum, at least once in a while. Also, since your screen name just joined this forum approx 6 days ago, I don't think you are a good candidate to judge how much value I add to this forum. I think your attack on me was to just flame the situation. Certainly I attacked you and your screen name and your company. I'm just trying to bring down the corporate machine that incessantly tries to raise its ugly head in this non-profit, for-students website.

Yes, I know, but it's a hassle just for me to look up the 7 things in order to construct a rebuttal in this forum.

I would like to say:

Topscore tech has been very quick and effecient with me. I like the service / product.

Topscore "security" is easily defeated if you want to do so. THey are aware of this though, and soon you'll probably have to register like the product like you register windows XP.

i definately think Hbomb's right...personally, I don't agree with Hbomb about one thing; which is I don't think he was rude. But I also don't think that scholarware was deliberately trying to advertise the company. But I love the way hbomb has the sense of what SDN is really all about...

Look, were not going to go back and forth. We are a great company and really do try and make things better for folks.

The expire does not preempt you from seeing the "7 Things", it's on the Start Menu.

Also, on our website at www.scholarware.com/advice-dat.htm (Free!)

Try not to be so negative to us off the bat...

All's we ask for our software is you be honest, pay for the use, and not cheat and get around the expiration. (not saying that you did, so don't go there, but considering the other post....)

Good luck getting in.

I can't stop bashing the corporate machine, so I'll just continue.

First off, Scholar, you clearly have an agenda which is not solely to help students here. It is clear to me you want to sell and protect this revenue-generating product. What I ask and have asked is that you come in here as Jason, the 3rd year dental student. If this were the case, you would not request the students here not cheat the company out of the expiration, at least IMO. Corporate America: do not ask anything of us in this forum, our forum!!! STUDENTS UNITE!!!

So please, come in here as Jason the 3rd year dental student and do away with Scholar, the coporate tool.

With your screen name and signature, ScholarWare, you do provide for a conspicuous target for some of the posters here. While I'll try not to take sides too much, I have to admit that your first post on this thread did raise my eyebrows. Granted, you are a live person behind the posts, but also bear in mind that the way in which you make your presence known on this non-profit, pro-student website might be construed by some individuals as a form of thinly veiled corporate promotion. SDN provides for a unique space on the internet in which students, from across both domestic and international borders, can engage each other with questions, opinions, and personal experience free from the formal structure of the classroom - or even a board room for that matter. So it should come as no surprise when some posters here feel threatened with the prospect - no matter how distant - of having their threads arbitrated by Kaplan, Barrons, or ScholarWare. I agree with HBomb's closing remark - perhaps it is best if you post as Jason, the third year dental student that speaks from his experience and not from a 'start menu', and not as a corporate moniker. You are of course welcome on SDN, though be aware that you might find yourself more in the role of a lightning rod than as an advisor if you choose to proceed in your current manner.

Hey Jess,

I just wanted to apologize for turning your original thread into my personal tirade. So I'm very sorry about that.

HBomb.

I personally didn't find scholarware to be that helpful (science questions were way too hard, and had a different scope than the real test), but I had no trouble with them as a company. I had trouble getting the CD to acutally run, and they were very helpful. Just wanted to share my experience.
