true story, took the USMLE on July 20, and then the COMLEX the following Wednesday, the 25th of July.

Now, I am in St. Maarten in the Caribbean... WOOO HOOOOO....

Been here since Friday the 27th.

I highly recommend going far away from whereever you are after taking those mind bending exams.

Thought I'd hop on the net and rub it in! 🙂 Good Luck to all you guys!

what made you decide to take both?? I am currently a 2nd year DO student in need of advise on this subject.
thanks

well, first off, i had to really pony up... It's not worth taking the USMLE if you're not going to be in the top 50% of all who take it as a D.O. student. The whole point is to represent yourself competitively and not scoring "better than average" probably won't help your cause when applying for a non-DO residency.

either way, i haven't gotten my scores so how I did is still a ??? I guess it's just time to wait by the mailbox in a couple weeks...

im not totally sure where I want to end up as far as specialties/residencies. Thus, doing well on both exams should leave a good amount of doors open when all's said and done... that's basically it...

I don't know exactly what I want to do. So, I figured I would take both tests. Work my ass off to be the best that I could be. That is, the best medical student I could be, which is what I am now. redundent?

Either way, I may not have been hurting myself in the long run by not taking the usmle, but at the same time, with the work i put in, i don't expect taking the usmle to hurt me either... if anything, just give me an extra door or two to choose from...

and for what it's worth, i found the comlex to be far more difficult than the usmle, so, if you're ready for that thing, you'll be straight for the usmle... imho

I'm am currently a pre-med undergrad student applying to both D.O. and M.D. schools. If for instance I get into D.O. school and go through D.O. medical school and then decide to take the USMLE test and compete for an allopathic residency, would I still be considered a D.O., or would I have MD behind my name? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

You would still have D.O. behind your name if you graduate from an osteopathic/D.O. school. Residency in an allopathic program does not change that.

the degree you receive (MD or DO) comes from your school as proof of having graduated. completing steps 1-3 of whichever exam you're required to take is what licenses you as a doctor to practice medicine. but from what i understand, if you're a DO and you go into an allopathic residency, you lose voting rights within the A.O.A.- i could be wrong but i'm pretty sure of it...

I took both the USMLE and the COMLEX, because I want to keep my options open (increase number of residency positions to choose from and apply for) when it comes to residency applications. The degree is what the school confers and does not change regardless of what type of residency programs you go through, period. I'm proud to be a D.O. c/o 2009! 🙂👍

Do some osteopathic schools let their students take the COMLEX so late like in late July? Maybe they start rotations relatively late as a third year.

for some reason i dont think thats a major deterrent for DOs doing allopathic residencies
