Just wondering...do all dental schools have white coat ceremonies?!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i dont know about all of them, but Michigan does and so does USC.

If I am not mistaken, it is when the faculty gives the incoming students their first "white coat" that they will be wearing during their 4 years. I'm sure there is more to it but that's the jist of it.

If I'm wrong, please correct me because this is what I am expecting.

Both UoP and UCLA do....as far as I know

Penn does. It's relatively new to the dental school circuit, so not all schools have white coat ceremonies.

Yea I thought it was more of a Med school thing.

Does Temple have a white coat ceremony????

See, this is great symbolism and all, and I'm ALL about rites of passage. But I think it's mui lame that most students wear scrubs or disposable gowns in clinics. A few decades ago, students all wore white lab coats, like we all will once we're practicing. It showed that you really were a clinician, and I imagine it looked more professional to patients. I see how uneconomical it would be, but I wish 'twere so! 🙁

white coat ceremony is just another half assed attempt to patronize egotistical pricks. a bit of humility wont hurt.

that said, does case have one?

Maybe you should have applied to Creighton then. Students there (from day 1) are required to wear professional attire. Thier White coat ceremony is also after they have passed part one of the national boards.

Yes, I read a while back that the tradition was started ~20 years ago at a medical school and has since caught on else where.

And I would like to add that a few decades ago dentists freely placed their hands into patients mouths and and 'dark drawer' sterilization of insturments wasn't unheard of. HIV and Hep B, as well as an increased knowlede about communicable diseases in general, have really altered the approach to protection in the clinic and those disposable gowns, face sheilds, and gloves are there for a very real reason. And if you think you're never going to be exposed to such pathogens or risks in your practice, take a look at some epidemiological studies become aware of the fact that these diseases don't discriminate on the basis of sex, geography, sexual orientation, or socio-economic status. Lame, indeed.

I found this on a Columbia website:

"In 1993, sponsored by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, an organization dedicated to humanism in medicine, P&S was the first medical school to perform the white coat rite, and the event has since become a tradition at more than 130 schools of medicine and osteopathy around the country, as well as numerous overseas schools. Columbia's dental and nursing schools, and others nationwide, also perform the ceremony."

P&S is the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University.
