I'm Oglala Lakota from Pine Ridge in South Dakota and was just wondering if there are any other Native Americans pursuing careers as pharmacists on here and what schools they are planning on attending or applying too. Currently I have been accepted to two schools but still have not made a final decision on where I will be headed.

I'm not Native American, but I just finished reading a book about the Oglala Lakota on Pine Ridge. It was very interesting. Good luck to you.

Nice, you guys thinking about working for IHS at all? I know they have the scholarship program that pays all your tuition with a stipend for living expenses if you work a year for every year they pay for school. My cousin is doing it right now for Physical Therapy.

Not Native American, but I wanted to note that the IHS has led the way for many of the roles pharmacists play today!

"Indian Health Service (IHS) pharmacists practice in a true pharmaceutical care environment where they fully utilize their knowledge and skills. IHS has pioneered many progressive and innovative advances over the past thirty years. Pharmacists have access to the patient's entire health record including laboratory results, immunization status, and past medical history to assess the appropriateness of drug therapy. Problems are resolved with providers prior to dispensing medications, and all patients are counseled on their medication therapy. In many locations, pharmacists are credentialed to provide primary care and use their prescriptive authority to evaluate and manage the care of certain patients." Also the first to use consultation rooms in the pharmacy.

Learned about it in my healthcare delivery class last semester!
