Hi folks,

Can anybody provide detail description/pros and cons (including consideration of work load, salary, benefits etc.) of Kaiser Permenante Hospitalist job opportunity in Southern California compare to other competiters Jobs and locums in that neighbourhood?!

Thanks.

I, too am definitely considering Kaiser for my IM residency. Can anyone that actually works there speak about what they like and dislike about being at a place like Kaiser?

I'm interested in NorCal Kaiser (although I haven't ruled out SoCal Kaiser completely). Which is the better program - SF or Oakland?

In general, people consider the Oakland program is better, unless this has changed in the last 4 years. the SF program is known to be somewhat more "demanding", and the percent of IMG's is higher. But Oakland is less pleasant of a city to live in. so take your pick

Yes, the Oakland hospital is one of the original Kaiser hospitals and therefore considered more the "Mothership." A friend of mine who rotated at both echoed earlier posts that resident quality is higher in Oakland- it's more attractive to US medical grads, but really just gets better people in general.

In terms of quality of life, it's true that the East Bay has a bit less going on than SF, but there are still some fantastic neighborhoods (Rockridge, Piedmont) as well as all of Berkeley, that are quite fun to live in and have cheaper/more spacious housing, easier parking, and other small perks compared to living in SF.

IM residency at K-SF is really fantastic. It's ideal for people who are motivated to learn and want to customize their residency. The electives are very "loose" in terms of restrictions so you can create any elective you like really. The program director is the most caring and involved PD I've ever seen, he will 100% go to the mat for you and he really looks out for the residents in terms of having reasonable caps and call schedules.

Oh...and the foreign grads are awesome. Unfortunate programs with lots of foreign grads are considered less prestigious so K-SF is trending away from it. It's sad because the foreign grads are some of the smartest and most impressive in the program, they definitely won't take just anyone.

Are you a resident there ?

Do osteopathic medical students have a chance at any of the Kaiser locations? If so, which is the most D.O. friendly location?

Yes they do. I have seen many DO residents and attendings. I think the oakland/SF kaisers are propbably the most DO friendly, but in truth all the california IM programs are.

all CA programs are DO friendly? really?

I think s/he meant that all the Kaiser CA programs are DO friendly. But I did a double-take on that one too.

On a related (but irrelevant) note, all of the Kaiser programs are in CA. While there are Kaiser hospitals other places (OR, CO, GA, HI), only CA hospitals have residencies.

Has anyone heard from Kaiser SoCal? It looks like all of the Kaiser programs have started sending out invites except for them?
