Can anyone speak to the quality/type of training in a Kaiser psych residency? Is their model of training similar to their model of care? Do they provide sufficient psychotherapy? Would they prepare one for a career outside of Kaiser?

I’ve heard decent lifestyle with bad training. They’re the closest thing to a psychiatry trade school.

I would expect low diversity at one of their programs. Personally I'd avoid.

A statement like this calls for more detail. Please do share.

I think they are all different. kaiser fontana is apparently awful. there are some good people at the kaiser oakland program and so it has the potential to be good. the oakland and santa clara programs are quite new. not all rotations are at kaiser. of course the purpose of these programs is to get people to work at kaiser for life. however, there is a massive demand for psychiatrists currently and it would be no bar to working in other systems. many system model off the kaiser model anyway. You should have plenty of moonlighting opportunities given the lack of call to diversify your clinical experiences anyway.

I've heard actually good things about the Kaiser Fontana Residency. Yes, lack of call is there but it gives more time for wellness, moonlighting and research. As with any program, your experience is what you make of it. You could be in an IMG sweatshop as well.

I mean call is an important learning experience in any residency, and to be honest, I feel like they use wellness as a selling point - it is pretty much euphemism for you don't have to work a lot. And somewhat disagree with experience is what you make of it... if you just don't come across enough psychopathology you don't know what you don't know.
