In internship now and my program has given me a book fund. Thinking of getting Kanski clinical ophthalmology. The current edition is the 7th from 2011. Anyone heard of any new editions coming out soon? Wondering if I should wait to buy it or get it now...

As a fresh ophthalmology graduate, I have read Kanski 7th. editions several times; honestly I do not recommend it because I think it is not an up to date source. If I were you I would send my money for AAO series. Retina, Cornea, lens and cataract and glaucoma books are perfect.

Don't pay for the AAO books most residencies give them to you. Enjoy your intern year. You will learn plenty of Ophtho in residency and most of what you would read now you will not retain.

If you want to just but books then I would consider buying the Wills Eye Manual as you will need that your first year. You can also get the Kaiser/Friedman/Trattler review book since you will use that to study for OKAP. I wouldn't read them now though.

Bcsc and wills are provided for me through my ophtho program. My prelim program is giving me about $600 to spend on books in addition. The reason I was thinking kanski is that it has lots of pictures and it seemed like a good bridge text when I read a little bit of it as a fourth year med student - is there a better book for such a purpose? I have to spend this $$$ on something.... Lenses are also provided by my ophtho program

If your school library has access to clinical key (a database like ovid/pubmed/uptodate) you can download Kanski for free- each chapter is it's own PDF. It's pretty sweet. I think most academic institutions give you access to clinical key.

Just a few that come to mind:

Spalton
Kanski
Friedman
Optics book - hunter
Neuro book

Basic Science books and Wills were provided by residency for us (most residency programs do this). I think a text reference is always a good idea to have around. I don't recommend you read the text book cover to cover, but as a reference it's a great book. Kanski and Yanoff/Duker are probably your two main choices in this regard. I went into retina and the Gass books and Yanuzzi atlas were vital for that field. I used my book fund for these big purchases. Most other question books and other references like Friedmans etc were a bit cheaper and my residency program gave me money for that each year. I actually won a Harrison's text book of Internal Medicine during internship (some research contest or something) and it has served as a pretty useful text to have around as well. I also bought some step 3 books, I think I got the Crush book and a few questions books or something like that. Take advantage of that free money!

Oh another thing...

Some programs will give you an iPad for free and kindle books = cheaper. I bought kanski as a kindle book and it was 100 bux less.

However, it is nice to have physical copies of some books.

Just a few things to consider when purchasing books.
