Since I've heard so many good things about Kaplan Biochem, I'm probably going to go through it.

Are these the "Lecture notes" everyone keeps talking about?

Also, are these good enough stand alone or did you guys listen to lecture.

Kaplan biochem is very very good. It's one of the best books in the Step 1 series from Kaplan in my opinion. I was given the books for free and read through probably 2/3 of the book twice. I thought it helped me out a lot to understand what was in First Aid.

I've listened to the audio (maybe for 2002) for Biochem, & correlating that with the Kaplan book, it was very helpful & gives you a better understanding of how the different aspects of biochem fit in with each other. Focuses also on the high-yield.

Kaplan audio lectures are available (for charge i guess) on the kaplan website. I got them as a package with the qbank that our school provided for us.

Holy crap. The biochem lecture notes from Kaplan are HUGE.

I made a schedule and basically allotted 4 days for biochem. Being that I remember little to nothing from two years ago, I'm finding I'm just going by the first aid and supplementing with the kaplan lecture notes for the stuff I don't get.

How on earth do you have time to go through most of those lecture notes?? I'm on my fourth day of studying and FREAKED.

1) Does anyone know if there have been major changes in the biochem notes since 2004? I have the 2004 version and wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything besides a few minor changes.

2) For people who have already taken their Step 1 and used the kaplan biochem notes, what method did you find worked best for learning these notes? And did you find some sections more HY than others, or some sections that were just useless information and can be easily skipped?

I don't know whether kaplan biochemistry notes have been changed since 2004 but a friend of mine just got her score (it's 99). She used Kaplan 2004 lecure notes & webprep audio + microbiology mad. rid. simp. plus goljan notes + audio and qbank of kaplan and usmleword and kaplan qbank. She is IMG and studied for ~4 months or more. She said kaplan biochemistry lecture notes are really good & enough. I also read lecture notes and listened audios, and I've also satisfied with it.

yeah, i'm using biochem right now. very good.
i'm also enjoying the kaplan physio notes.

how will u compare rr biochem with kaplans biochem?

i have them both.. rr & kaplan.

overall kaplan is better. for metabolism chapters, i absolutely loved rr - it was highly integrated with other subjects.

My exam had <10 biochem questions on it, but 10-20 medical genetics questions (which were much more difficult).

Kaplan biochem prepared me well. First aid was insufficient for the med genetics.
