Received my score yesterday, I got only 40% of the questions correct 😳. I am really worried as my target score is to get 550+. Is this a typical diagnostic score for people in the beginning? I did start to listen to Goljan lectures, and started to go through RR and FA. We get access to the Kaplan Qbank, but I was also going to buy UsmleWorld qbank. My exam date is on June 22nd, so I was planning on doing about 2-3 hrs/day of board studying from now on, and increase it to about 8-9 hrs/day after our classes end in May

btw my top 3 residency choices as of now are Anes, ER, and IM in no particular order. I only plan on taking the COMLEX Step 1, but I was going to study for it like I was studying for the USMLE. My books of choice are RR, FA, USMLE Buzzwords Recall, My school notes, OTM Sarvesse, and Goljan Lectures.

Thanks guys any input will be much needed.

take a nbme exam and see how you do. it will mean much more than anything from kaplan.

i don't know but what's a COMPLEX USMLE STEP 1 opposed to a normal one?

COMLEX is the Medical licensing Exam the Osteopathic Medical Students have to pass to get board certified as practicing physicians. It has a Level 1, 2, and 3 just like the USMLE step 1, 2, and 3. As Osteopathic students we are required to pass the COMLEX, but can also take the USMLE if we feel like we need it for our residency application.

NBME is different from the COMLEX. It correlates to the USMLE. The USMLE and the COMLEX are 2 different tests. Take the COMSAE if you want a good correlation to the COMLEX.

i agree but the comlex is easier than the usmle so if you study for the usmle and add omm prep then you will do much better.

comlex is not easier then usmle...in fact comlex questions are more vague and no buzz words (instead you need to know the meaning of buzz words)...it's two different exams for which you have to study differently to do well on both...i have friends who took both and all of them said comlex was harder because questions didnt often have enough clues...there is also more emphasis on anatomy with comlex and less on biochem.

to the OP...comlex diagnostic is just to tell you what your weaknesses are and where to direct your focus...but in my school i was told that if you scored on it around 50%, statistically you have high chance to do well on comlex as long as you put in the work to prep...don't freak out just look at what sections you are having trouble with (for instance if you got like 30% on path) concentrate on that first.

good luck:luck:

the kaplan diagnostic exam is hella tough. I feel ALL diagnostic exams are tough. It is in the companies best interest to make you score "low" so that you buy their prep books, ect.

Our class avg. was around 40% on the diagnostic exam and is about the same from previous years. Also, the actual avg scores from previous years were around 520 on the comlex, so I feel like as long as you study, who cares what the diagnostic score is.

OP,
Just curious, what did you end up getting on the COMLEX? I just took my first diagnostic and scored very similar to you.. I'm also looking into similar residencies.. Thanks!

COMSAE has a practice test for only 50 bucks. could try that. but maybe save it until later on...
