If the magnetic field a distance r away from a current carrying wire is 10 T, what will be the total magnetic field at r if another wire is placed a distance 2r from the original wire and has a current twice as strong flowing in the opposite direction?
My question is, how do you draw a picture for this problem? Nowhere in the question does it tell you how to draw the picture because it doesn't say how the two wires are placed relative to one another. I drew a wire and then another wire right below it so that it is separated by a 2r distance. Using my drawing, I couldn't figure out the problem so when I looked at the answers, they drew the wires so that both wires were equidistant from the 10T point.
In other words, in my picture, the second wire was a distance of 3r from the point where there is a magnetic field of 10T, but in the answers, the second wire was a distance of r from the point. I'm a bit frustrated because they don't tell you how to draw it. Perhaps some of you guys might see it differently? Do you have any advice on how to approach problems like this and draw the right picture instead of the wrong one? Thanks!
