Kaplan Test Question Help!

Hi!

I just took a practice Kaplan test and in the QR, there was a question:

What is x if:

squareroot(2 * (5 / (x+3))) = 10

While doing it I got some negative answer, but none of the answers were negative! So looking at the answer explanations, it made no sense. Could someone take a look at it for me?

That is a mistake done by the Kaplan company. The answer to that question can easily be found as being (-2.9). They clearly make a mistake in the explanation when they subtract 3 from both sides of the equation. The proper step at this point would be multiplying 50 by the denominator (x+3), which would give you, 50x + 150 = 5. Then, subtract 150 from both sides, leaving 50x = -145, divide both sides by 50 and you will get -2.9. I'm sure this is what you have calculated as well. Dont bother with this question, somethimes Kaplan makes these mistakes. Are you taking the online Kaplan course?

ajlst11, thanks for confirming what I was thinking! Yeah I did what you did. I just find it really funny that Kaplan would make the mistake even in the explanation, cause that means someone must have been typing up the explanation while going through it and not catching it.
