is it me or does it seem like schools like DMU and KCOM push their students into primary residencies...vs. AZCOM and TUCOM....

i looked at the placement lists...and that's just the feeling i got. in my intv. both dmu and kcom said the opposite..any students out there that can give out some details...

thanx 😀

when i looked at KCOM's residency placement, although the majority went into primary care, there were those in specialties too. i agree that self-selection probably plays a big role.

I don't think that DMU pushes you to go into primary care, but that is just where a majority of people end up going. I think all osteopathic schools have a higher percentage of FP grads. I wouldn't really know how a school could train you for a specialty though, since I would think that all schools go for the basics and then you have to do the specified training based on your rotation choices....

Believe me you are not pushed into Primary Care here at DMU. You do what you want to do. One of the things that I really liked was that pretty much the whole 4th year except you rual or community med is elective time.

thanks guys for all the responses.....they're all really helpfull

AZCOM *does* push primary care, however subtly. The rotation setup is inherently friendly to primary care-leaning students, and lectures are peppered with references to what we will or won't see as primary care docs.

With that said, as you've noticed our match list is pretty well-stocked with good match rates into competitive specialties. Personally, I think that an early emphasis on primary care makes one an all-around more competent student, which plays well whatever specialty you're applying for. In short, don't let an emphasis on primary care scare you away from a school--the better you are at the basics, the better a shot you'll have at matching into specialties of every stripe.
