KCUMB To Open a Location in Joplin

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
"The hospital also, at its own expense, will provide residency and training opportunities for KCU students at a cost of $85,000 per slot."

But how many will they fund? I'm guessing it's not 150 spots--the size of the planned first class.

Agreed. I'm guessing they'll expand their internal medicine, emergency medicine and maybe psychiatry programs which currently have ~3 spots per year. I assume that the number of added spots will be ~4/year, at least at first. They could add a family medicine residency, but that seems less likely than adding to existing programs.

Reckless expansion really needs to stop

Agree completely, but it's different when a well established school opens a satellite campus for an area of need (Joplin has a huge shortage). I'd prefer this over completely new programs. Many MD schools have been opening satellite campuses as well (Oklahoma opened up a Tulsa program and then UT health network is opening up one next August in Austin).

The OU satellite campus isn't even an expansion; we're keeping the same number of students per class, it's just that some of them will now do all 4 years in Tulsa instead of just the last 2.

KCU- Joplin is a pretty gigantic inaugural class I must say. They're getting a lot of money to build that campus however.

To extend my previous post, take a look at the opportunities.osteopathic website. There are listings for several KCU residencies through Mercy-Joplin which I can only assume are in the pre-approval stage. It looks like there will be FM, IM, and anesthesia there, but there is no information regarding the number of spots in each yet. That with the newly announced FM program in Indiana, it's appearing like KCU is seriously expanding its GME

I doubt many of the 162 new students/year will ultimately practice in SW Missouri.

KCU will likely now matriculate 432 students per year. It is a respectable program, but there is something disconcerting about a class size that huge...it kind of makes the school come across (whether true or not) as more interested in money than actually desiring to make a difference in SW Missouri's healthcare.

I see where you're coming from, but that'll be the case at any school. Not all of them will stay in SW Missouri, but I can name a fair number of people in my class (KCU M1) off the top of my head that want to go home and practice in that region. Money is also going to be at least some kind of factor for any school, as you can't really do anything without the funding. Considering KCU has decreased tuition 2 years in a row while starting a ton of new construction projects, I don't think money is a major mission.
