KCUMB vs MSU com

I just got accepted at msu com...

Don't know much about it because I never been there

The military will pay for school, which school should I choose. Remembering that i will most likely do a military residency ?

MSUCOM doesn't interview.

If the military is paying, I'd say maybe go for MSUCOM... but I really don't know anything about which school would be better for military match or if it matters at all. Maybe you could visit MSU to check it out?
 
MSUCOM doesn't typically interview, but I hear they are starting to beginning next cycle.

Both are awesome schools. You have a preference on location at all? MSUCOM currently has 2 of their 3 sites with availability. Those are the East Lansing campus and the Macomb University Center branch of the school.

I know much about MSUCOM as I will be matriculating there this coming June. PM me if you want more information. I have heard amazing things about KCUMB as well. I actually know someone who graduated from KCUMB this past year and is a general surgery resident in Michigan currently.

MSUCOM doesn't do interviews as part of their admissions process.

OP, I think you need to visit MSUCOM before you make a decision. I haven't been to either of these schools, but I know that they are both highly established and will definitely get you where you want to be provided that you put in the effort. Take a day to visit the campus, and then decide. Which campus did you feel more home at? What location do you prefer? I'm terms of curriculum and minor details like recorded lectures, attendance policy, etc., which school better fits your overall learning style? These are some questions that may help you decide. Both are fantastic schools so congratulations on getting accepted! Definitely a great dilemma to be in! 🙂

@johnamo can give you a great rundown of MSUCOM.

@chizledfrmstone and @Stagg737 can do the same for KCUMB.

I suggest you PM both of them for really good reviews of the schools and make your decision from there!
 
Agree with most of what has already been said. If you're considering attending MSU, go visit. I'm sure they would be more than happy to give you a tour and answer your questions. There is really nothing that anyone can say that will actually let you feel what it's like to be on campus.

MSUCOM is a great school, especially for primary care. I honestly don't know how good they are for going into specialties, but considering Michigan has the most AOA residencies of any state, I'd imagine they are also pretty darn competitive in that category as well. I know KCU (that is our name now) does not struggle with residency placements in primary care or specialty fields.

I'd think about location as well. The geographical location of your med school does effect where you do residency and where you practice. So if you don't like KC or Michigan, you may not want to go to school there. I'd also look into the actual campus and the curriculum (both will play a major role in what you learn as a physician and also how you do on boards).

Like altered said, if you have questions about KCU, feel free to PM me. Otherwise I'd definitely say visit MSUCOM or any school you are even considering attending.

I do like MSUCOM and know that KCU is also a very, very good school. However, I've never visited KCU so I unfortunately can't compare one-to-one. I would say to go to KCU if cost were a factor (MSU OOS tuition is just insane), but with the scholarship I think you cannot make a bad decision either way. I totally agree with Stagg that location and curriculum should be a big factor in your decision.

We are known as a good primary care school (#9) -- and a lot of my classmates want to go into primary care -- but I do know plenty of people from the school who went on to competitive residencies (rad-onc, ophtho, plastics, vascular surgery, etc etc.). MSUCOM also runs the largest network of AOA residencies... so it's nice that we can rotate at a lot of these sites and build up some connections.

If you are at all interested in research (which can be of great benefit if trying to match into competitive residencies) than MSUCOM has the advantage. If research is not something you are crazy about than it's a toss up and like everyone else said you have to see which is a better fit. I know MSUCOM has an accepted student day coming up in March. They just sent an email to all accepted students, but if you just got accepted you may not have gotten it.

Yeah I'd agree with that. KCU (KUCMB, name change) is still trying to establish themselves as a strong research school (and they are doing a great job so far with this: http://president.kcumb.edu/2015/01/kcu-among-partners-in-54-million-award.html) but there are HUGE perks to being affiliated with a university. One thing is for sure, if you want strong research then always regard the school that offers a Physician Scientist training pathway (MD PhD or DO PhD).

Fairly certain KCU will have a DO PhD program within the next decade, saw it on one of their plans of development.

Agree. Out of all the non-university associated DO schools KCU is def one of the strongest in terms of research. I mean even PCOM has a DO-PhD program and their research is not up to the same level as KCU.

Yep, Dr. McCormick (our research director) just told us the other day that we've retained the top position for DO school NIH funding... so, lots of good work is going on! Plus, beyond the COM, there are lots of other labs to work in.. honestly, hundreds of professors would take med students. My current work, for example, is affiliated with the MD and nursing schools.
 
I can't imagine Michigan winters....for that reason I would choose KCU. LOL

Seriously though, look at location, available resources, mandatory/non mandatory lecturers, etc.....also, were you given info about KCU's military honors track? I've heard good things about it from some of the people who are currently in it. Dr Hahn and Dr Dubin are VERY supportive of that new military track

Yeah... it is kind of -8 degrees right now... 😛

As far as military goes, our dean was actually a military physician and is very supportive of students with military scholarships. However, because of our summer start date and some of the semester scheduling (not long enough gaps), I know at least one friend (USAF) has had a difficult time scheduling his basic training and whatnot.

Honestly, the more I hear about MSUCOM, the more I really do believe that it will just come down to where you feel more comfortable and which curriculum you like better. I think either school will give you a great chance of getting where you want to go. Personally, the reason I didn't apply to MSUCOM (and the reason I think most people advise against going there) is how ridiculously expensive it is. Other than that I've never really heard negatives about the school other than 'it's cold in winter'.

Something that should also be added is that KCU is highly collaborative with UMKC and Kansas U (both MD programs) in terms of research and rotations. All three schools have new deans and there was actually just a mini-conference/panel here in which all 3 deans spoke about the future and working together. I know a few people here that do research at those schools' hospitals. So if you can't find something on campus to research (there's more here than I originally thought), there are a lot of opportunities at the local MD schools, which have some ridiculous resources/funding.

Along those collaboration lines. We match a lot of people at KU's programs. 14 last year, 9 the year before (pretty low year), 25 people the year before that etc. Stats are similar for UMKC programs. So I'd say that whichever school you choose you will be in a region with very little bias against the DO degree.

Gotta give a plug for this. Dr. Dubin LOVES the mil med people. He served for a long time and has some insane stories, so he is very close with those students. Plus there are some separate classes for them that will give them skills that will benefit them in their military future. I considered HPSP, but ended up deciding it wasn't for me, so I looked into it pretty significantly for a bit. Whatever school you go to (both apparently have deans in mil med), I'd take advantage of that and get to know the dean really well. It's a connection that will make your life significantly easier.

I am deciding my decision on if msu com'a first years can convince me to go there. Otherwise, I already payed my deposit to KCU and will just go there !

The thought of 3 campuses freaks me out. How do i pick which campus ! What if I chose wrong.

Also holy crap Mi is cold and I have never seen snow. Is the culture shock of Michigan to much?

Haha, well it's not my job to convince you to come to MI. I know several people who want nothing more than to be accepted to MSUCOM, so I'm not going to plead with you to take a spot if you don't really want it. 😛

Culture shock? I lived in Boston for a while and there's really no 'culture shock' being in East Lansing. Yeah, maybe you don't have a Whole Foods on your street corner or a symphony within walking distance... but EL is a relatively good college town. Anyhow, I'm happy to answer questions, but I'm not going to try to convince you MSUCOM is better than KCU. You can't go wrong with either, so it's up to you to decide which is the better fit.

MSUCOM is a very good school honestly. You cannot go wrong going there and this is coming from someone going to KCU!

I highly doubt any matriculant to MSUCOM left medical school because of culture shock or the cold.

KC is a downtown area and it's a 5 minute drive there from the school. There's a bit of a hipster vibe in KC too.

Have you looked at the curriculum of both? Have you seen where students go for clerkships?

Well i have done a lot of digging lately. It seems like both schools are pretty much the same.
