Does anyone know about this program? I am interested in going and have been trying to dig up information on line, but there is a shortage of it. So I thought I would ask my trusty Sdn'rs.

How competitive is it to get into this program? (GPA, MCAT, etc)

How do their students do during medical school admissions?

Here is a link to their site
http://www.usc.edu/schools/medicine/education/degrees_programs/msgm/msgm_catalogue.html

Thanks!

I just got a letter and a flyer in the mail about the program today. I had gone to a graduate conference and they must have had my mailing address. It looks interesting. I can scan the flyer and letter if you want and email it to you. They probably don't have any more information than the website though.

I'm looking to apply to this as well..
The rep at health school fair said the program used to be for SC students and recently opened up for all applicants which seems to be why there aren't that much info out there.
Really, if anyone knows more about this and how difficult it is to get in, please do share!

Good afternoon OP,

I have attended several information seminars from Dr. Nezami, one of the associate deans of the department, explaining several points about the program. From what I remember, the program is fairly new (only several years) and is trying to improve each year. From the success stories of the first years, Dr. Nezami has been trying to expand the class size. I believe the size is approximately 40 students. I do not know exactly how difficult it is to get into the program, but from the information she gave about the admitting class, it sounded very competitive. Students from all over the nation apply, include those from top IV league schools.

A timeline bit: For those who did apply, I just received my letter yesterday. Please post if you have any news or stories!

Just out of curiosity, doorknowquestn, when did you submit your application for this program at USC?

Hey DoorknobQuestn! I got my acceptance letter a few weeks ago. But it didn't mention anything about orientation and such. I know Karissa in the office mentioned orientation was around Aug 8-9 and classes start Aug 10. Did you happen to get any detailed information about that?

I also attended the GM welcome/celebratory BBQ at the dean's house. The people seem pretty cool and very diverse. I'm excited about starting school again but I feel like the GM office is lagging in sending out any information to admitted student. >_<

I was just admitted and will be attending next year as well. I had to search on google to find orientation info and even find my Intent to Enroll form.

does this program help to get people into medical school?

According to their website and the program admissions office people I spoke with, the answer is yes. Also, considering it is very similar to other smp programs that have been around for a long time, it follows that this one will have a very similar track record as the type of program that does in fact help a lot if you do well.

Does anyone know the percent of students accepted to medical school after completing this program? Thanks.🙂

This is only it's 4th year and it only had 12 students it's first year so obviously the program director couldn't give me much to go on but I personally know people who were accepted to med school with the help of this program. Even the established programs don't have solid percentages.

Hi imedatuci,

I was wondering what the undergraduate stats were of the people you know who got into medical school through this program at usc. gpa and mcat are fine.

if you don't know the exact numbers, can you give a rough idea (e.g. gpa > or < 3.3, MCAT > or < 32).

or give me an idea of whether or not they were strong candidates for medical school without this program.

thanks.

Hey docindev,

I would say that they probably all had between 3.3-3.5 undergrad gpa-wise before the program and most likely between 29-32 on the mcat. Granted, they might have retaken after the program started. That is what I plan to do, at least.

I would say they were fairly strong candidates for medical school if they didn't live in California, where a 3.6 and 32 might get you in somewhere, but you can't hold your breath. Obviously they all had an interest in Global Medicine/Health so their resume reflected that.

Hi iMed,

Make sure you got the date down for Aug 8th orientation. I checked the USC website and it stated August 22 for graduate orientation, but the USC GM is totally different from that since we follow the med school schedule (it's because of that Core Principles class). I talked to both Amy and Karissa and they confirmed that orientation for us is August 8th in the morning and in the afternoon on the same day we have our first class with the med students. Hope that helped if you were confused like I was.

For those that got into this program, could you please maybe share your stats? I know that iMEDatUCI shared the general GPA/MCAT, but I'd really like to know real stats for people who got in, if possible. Out of all the SMPs, this is the one I'd really like to go to, because I live somewhat close to it (at least compared to other SMPs haha). And congratulations to you guys -- I hope I can get into an SMP next year too :luck:

Hey erure,

I'm not sure what you mean by "real stats" but I'll tell you the things I thought helped my app if you pm me. I don't want to put everything online.

Sorry about that -- I think I wrote that very late at night so my writing wasn't very clear. By real stats, I meant what you personally got for GPA and MCAT. Would be great if you could tell me both cumulative GPA and science GPA but if not, that's okay too. Anyway I'll send a PM. Thank you! 😀

Hi iMedatUCI,

I am interested in the program as well but dont know if I am competitive enough. Can you share your stats with me as well so it gives me an idea if I have a shot with this program? 🙂

Thanks!

Sure, go ahead and PM me. In fact, anyone who has questions, PM me.

For those admitted-
did you receive information in the mail? and where is everyone living?

I got info online first and then in the mail. I'm living on the health sciences campus at the res hall.

Here is an article that has bios on 4 different USC MS in Global Medicine Alumni, all of which went on to attend MD schools (one is USC):

http://gsj.cgpublisher.com/product/pub.184/prod.190

Also, a friend of mine who just graduated went on to medical school as did "about 17 of the 20 people [she] knew who applied after the program". She mentioned 3 of them by name who got into places like UCLA, USC, and UCI.

I just wanted to add these pieces of information about this program because I hear a lot of buzz (and receive quite a few PMs) questioning how helpful the program is. Whenever people say what they've heard, it seems to be all speculative. For those who are interested, I would suggest this program is better for those with gpa's of at least 3.2+ (according to the people I was told found success), but know that people ARE finding success with this program.

I'm really interested in this program. Keep us updated guys!

Just looking at USC's website, the classes look similar to what an MPH would be. Are there med school-like classes that you can take as well (like with the med school class)? I have a feeling this program is for students with good stats.

Please see earlier posts. You take the core classes with the medical students first semester. Basically, it's the MS1 core. Your blocks include lectures in everything from Psychiatry to Physiology to Genetics taught by actual tenured medical school faculty. This program is not an MPH. I would say 90% of the students in the program are applying to medical school from it and it's supposed to be a supplement to medical school education. I asked the program staff in person and they quoted me that they've had a 70% rate of students getting into medical school from the program with the other 30% being wait listed. So, I'm assuming people have to have pretty good stats coming into the program. They told me that one person applied to USC med school and didn't even get an interview, then got in after the program.

Those are definitely good stats. I see you're in the program, so those numbers should be encouraging.

Have you already started? It sounds like a real good program if you're taking MS1 classes like you said. I just didn't see the Physiology or Genetics classes listed on their website. Their curriculum looks a lot different than MS1 based on their site: http://keck.usc.edu/en/Education/De...of_Science_in_Global_Medicine/Curriculum.aspx Do they just not list the MS1 classes on there for some reason?

Core Principles System I & II is what the medical school core curriculum is called:

Anyone heard anything recent about this program?

I'm resurrecting this thread.

I'm a California resident with a marginal shot at attending a UC medical school (irvine or davis), who would have a much better shot with this program.

Anyone have any news?
