I have shaggy surfer hairstyle... exactly like the hairstyle seen in this picture..

http://preppyjournal.com/images/2008/hair1.jpg

can I keep this "surfer hairstyle"... i have recently been accepted to med school.. i have no tatoos nor earings nor any piercings.. just the hairstyle.... i have had a hairstyle like this since freshman year in HS.....

parents are saying though that it looks too unprofessional and now because I am going to become a doctor to get a "clean cut" haircut...

please give any suggestions you may have... i really want to keep this hairstyle of mine, but dont want it to give off a "bad vibe" once i enter med school... i am a serious hard working student who is committed to doing well... if it will hinder my ability to make friends in med school or in any way hinder my overall reputation on professors i will get it cut.. but if it is just an unreasonable fear I wont.

I think that's fine as long as it's well kept.

If you have no patient contact for the first two years, you'd be fine holding off for awhile. At my school we started having patient contact in the first month, right after the lecture on "Professionalism," which included expected dress and grooming. This might be very school-specific though. What did the med students look like when you took your tour? Maybe a more relaxed policy is the norm there.

i guess the hairstyle means it is not regarded as professional... I was thinking that when I wear a tie, white shirt, and khakis I look professional despite the hairstyle... guess not 🙁....

it is also an issue with my loyalty and love for my frat... all my frat brothers have a hairstyle like this, so if i get it cut, i feel like I am being disloyal to my frat haha 😎... btw Pi Kappa Alpha Rocks!!

Despite being a Frat guy myself, I think that's kind of silly.... But I got my haircut in college to fit in the greek system as well. So I guess I can't really judge 😛

Regardless of the cut there are ways you can style it so it looks professional. I think there is too much emphasis on the short and conservative cut.

congratulations on your acceptance! Because you are now entering a professional community (and not the party social greek crowd), the rules change. While the hairstyle is fine, maybe you have some of the common notorious behavorial trademarks associated with frats... if that is the case, I would drop those before entering med school... but you seem like a serious guy that has made it this far (which many dont), so you definetly do have the characteristics to be very successful in med school... i see a well rounded person in you who would make a great doc (assuming you are not the TV typical frat guy haha)

Hey, it's not a big deal... No schools care about that at all...

keep it. i am gonna grow a grizzly beard and hardly ever cut my hair

haha yea i saw those... too funny...

but i have a guilty confession about the hairstyle i have ... girls do dig it as from my personal experience haha

Just cut it a little shorter for the beginning of the year, and feel out what is expected of you. Accordingly, you can start to grow it back out if that is what you end up wanting to do.

btw, did you check out the other hair pics from that link?! very funny:

Maybe you should go for one of those instead...

I'm going with what my stylist calls "the Billy Ray." When you walk into the room, the patient can see you're all business. After you're done with the exam and as you're leaving the room, they can see you're still a party animal at heart.

My hair was very similar to the photo during my first year of med school. Second year I cut it shorter because of more clinical work. Third year, which begins next month, I am going with the short "doctor" look because I don't want to antagonize anyone who will be evaluating me on rotations. Fit in and look professional.

By the way, it is time for you to move on.....your time as frat boy is over. I was a frat boy so I speak from experience.

that hairstyle doesn't even look good.
what about earrings? are those acceptable? very small and not flashy

It doesn't look unprofessional to me, especially for a young person. But I'm in California so what I consider professional should probably be taken with a grain of salt.

hahahaha. IDK, I agree, though. I think it's fine for a professional look.

shave your head, SON! medical school is like the military

totally keep the hair, it's hot. we have a guy in our class with the same hair except that his is dirty blond and he's just so hot when it's all messy.

i am middle eastern... black hair, tan skin... should i still keep the hair?.. i dont fit the traditional look that students and professors expect of arabs and indians (especially those in med school)... and there are a lot in med school from what i hear

non-blond surfer boy

even hotter

Keep it. If it's professional enough to get you through your interviews, it'll be fine during rotations and patient interactions.

that hairstyle got you into med school right?

yes, it is the same hairstyle that got me into med school. But I think it were my stats more than anything and not really my interview that got me in.. But now that I am in, I am looking into plastics or derms but to get that involves not only good USMLE score but also excellent subjective grades and recommendations which I am scared may be hindered because I possibly give a "bad vibe" through my hair style and being in a frat (I will not stop wearing my frat shirt... it is one of the most precious things to me 😍)

Keep it for the first two years (which are all about multiple-choice exams, and have very little - if any - subjective grades).

Cut it for your third and fourth years, which are ALL about subjective grades.

Hahaha, and of course it won't hinder your ability to make friends. 😀

I almost considered keeping my hair like that when I INTERVIEWED, much less after I was accepted. Keep it, I'm growing mine out back to that length as we speak.

i'm pretty sure you wont have a hard time finding friends in med school... haha...

just keep growing it out - theres a lot more fraternity guys on this site than i would have imagined

dude, keep it. I'm actually going more towards 'rave' style now. preppy is boring and I've done it for the last 8 years...

i am only looking for study buddies in med school... not get in a serious relationship with a fellow female med student... i am going for girls who are in communications major/ psych majors.. in my undergrad that is where all the beautiful ladies/ sorority girls are lol.. would these med students still be friends then if all I want to do is study with them?... all the premed girls in my school are UGLY and hate me thinking I am not serious enough and view me as a party animal lol.. and in reality I end up getting better grades then them and live a well balanced life rather than locking myself up in the lib 24/7

Plenty of people in my school with various hairstyles. At least a few wear their hair like you with pride.
Keep it for at least the first two years, and figure it out as you go. Eventually when you get on the wards you may have to cut it, but hey that's 2 years away. Have fun and be young while it lasts.

We're talking FRIENDS, not potential girlfriends. You know, amigos, compadres, amies, drinking buddies, etc.

Whether or not you'll be able to pick up chicks with that haircut is up to you. But we're saying that you'll be able to make friends and study buddies in med school, whatever your hair looks like.

If, however, you're unable to make friends, it may have more to do with your patronizing and elitist attitude.

Ah, proof once again that belonging to a college fraternity ******s the emotional, intellectual and social growth of boys in late adolescence. And I say this as a recovering frat boy myself, four years removed. Seriously, lose the frat shirt!

Hey man, correlation doesn't equal causation. I was already ******ed before I joined my fraternity....

Please keep it. The ladies would thank you! 😉

My god, you fit the PIKE stereotype to the T.

1. Only interested in com/business girls because that's where all the "hot" ones are
2. "Surfer" style haircut
3. I assume most of your mandatory gym hours are spent working out your broceps and chest
4. Conceited to no end ("and in reality I end up getting better grades then them and live a well balanced life rather than locking myself up in the lib 24/7"). Do you have any idea how that sounds?
5. Self-proclaimed "party animal"

But hey, kudos to you I guess. It looks like (based on the female representation in this thread) that's what girls want.

I know that sounds horrible, but I am sick of premed girls... Oh no, I actually go to bars, hang out with sorority girls, and sometimes DJ rather than studying O-chem ALL THE TIME.. I am such a bad guy (that is what all the premed girls think of me)... and honestly, I am probably just as determined to succeed and am focused on doing well just as any of my fellow premed female students.

feel my pain bro 🙁

I don't question your determination. I question your attitude. Do you honestly think many of these pre-med females are studying O-chem all the time? They are just like you, they have activities outside their studies. Trust me, the reason that they don't like you (if even that is true, all the female premeds I know are great people), is because your attitude.

Like I said man, you sound like every PIKE frat guy I have ever met. You carry an air of superiority and exclusivity, and it reeks of insecurity. Anybody who doesn't fit your mold is disgusting in your eyes. As searun said above me, top of the chain greek life severely stunts "emotional, intellectual and social growth of boys in late adolescence." All your posts are indicative of this. I wish you the best of luck.

Well, I used the word "******s" as in inhibits, slows, does not contribute to or promote personal or intellectual growth. But, obviously, you had the qualities that made you a great pledge, i.e. a huge capacity to consume alcohol and insult 18 year old girls. Congrats. Qualities to be proud of.

What, you completely understand girls now?... Nobody - not even girls- understand girls... lol..

so u both are wrong... its not that pre-med chicks don't dig you because they think you're a party animal or because u have a bad attitude...

apparently, at your school.. none of the pre-med girls are cool enough and they are jealous of you 😛.. i could be wrong too..lol.. nobody understands girls..

I can't even believe this is an actual topic. Good luck in dermatology, bra.

PS: I agree with the above poster: that attitude will lead you nowhere, especially with girls that count.

Oh man. I was trying to have fun. And there you go making it all mean!

Whoa dude, you totally break the mold of typical pre-med. All I ever did was study O-chem. You're 2 cool for med school, methinks.

Med schools are finally getting some interesting diversity. Surfer boys? What's next? Hooters girls?😛

OP, the hair is fine. But you may attract scoffers since, as much as we say otherwise, med schools love conformity. Good luck with med school but tread carefully.

PS: If you're looking for a specialty in the future, pick derm! Trust me, chicks will be lining out your front door and you'll have time to surf too!

Hey, Mods, can we have a new rule on SDN. Nobody is permitted to say they are going into derm or plastics until they have finished their second year of med school, taken Step One, and have a minimum score of 250. There are few things more annoying that undergrads stating that they are going into derm, for the chicks and the lifestyle, because skin is really kind of boring, especially if they were in a fraternity.
