Hey all,

Ive got a problem and I need some tips. Im in my PGY 2 year of surgery subspecialty and almost every day I come home late- like 7-8 pm to start back up at 5am for rounds. What is a good way to combat fatigue so you can keep up with the books? I tried reading after work but cant concentrate very much. I guess the only option is to read before work. Any ideas?

There is almost always some downtime during the day. Like you, I found it almost impossible to study once I got home, due to physical exhaustion. Therefore, consider the following:

- carry a chapter (or less) of your preferred text around in your pocket and read while waiting for a case to go, while on call, etc.

- if you have any commute at all, record yourself reading the chapter outloud to listen to on your IPod or CD player

Finally, if you do a little bit every night (even only 10 minutes), its a lot easier than reading for 2 hours on the weekends.

- if you have any commute at all, record yourself reading the chapter outloud to listen to on your IPod or CD player

I wouldn't recommend driving and reading out loud AND trying to record yourself at the same time, but that's just me.
