Kent State or Temple

Hey everyone. I got accepted into both schools, and now I have a really tough decision to make. I'm from NJ and I thought Temple would have been a better choice for me because I liked their location and facility, but when I went to Kent State, their facility was outstanding. Does anyone know stats about each school (board pass rate, student to dr. Ratio, ect.)? I wanna pick a school that gives me the best education and a smooth 4 years. I don't want to be distracted by the bells and whistles of the facilities. Please help!

The information you are asking for is not readily available. Temple has historically provided some of their board pass rates.

I'd like to put forward two different considerations to you - Lifestyle and Freedom.

Lifestyle. I have a hard time believing that living in an Ohio suburb and living in downtown Philly aren't going to offer different lifestyles to you. I don't know where you come from or what you are seeking, but at the end of the day your life will only be partially consumed by school. At some point you will leave campus or buy groceries and when you do - boom. Lifestyle. I chose a school that offered an out of school existence that was pretty much identical to where I came from. There was no adjustment or shell shock.

Academic Freedom. With the exception of labs, you should be able to decide your daily schedule. Class shouldn't be mandatory. Ask some current students what a day in their life looks like and if there are a lot of mandatory activities. I don't know for Kent or Temple.

There are occasional threads on here about attending a school that offers the most clerkship opportunities during 3rd and 4th year. As of the last thread everyone is currently claiming they offer...5+ to 7 so who knows.

I think the general response for things like this is to go where you felt most comfortable. Either school will give you the knowledge you need to pass boards and get placed, but chances are if you are "out of your element" or don't feel at home where you go, you may not so do as well.

I didn't visit Temple, however while most students live in the 'burbs' around Kent, Downtown Cleveland is only 10 minutes away and from my visit there, I thought Cleveland was a very cool city with plenty to do.

As for Academics, the students that gave me my tour at Kent kept talking about lectures being recorded and not having to go to class so that may play into your sense of "academic freedom" as brother mentioned.

I am always in favor of big cities for a miriad or good reasons but again go where you feel you will succeed and enjoy living.

Personally, I chose Temple because it is in center city Philadelphia. Cool city. Great vibes. Perfect for single people. Walking distance to restaurants, bars, grocery stores, and the school itself.

If you are more of a suburb-drive-my-car kind of guy, or if you have a family and do not "go out" much, I'd go with Kent.

There are also other factors: clinic, pass rates, boards, facilities, etc. Information for these topics can be found by using the "search" feature on this forum. Making multiple threads is not necessary as these topics have been HEAVILY discussed.

To the IrishGiant, from what I gathered Kent and Temple are pretty much similar academically. The only real difference is where you would like to live for the next 4 years. Luckily enough, I have spent time in both areas (grew up in NE Ohio, lived in Philly for last two years). Personally, I chose Kent because my wife and I wanted to move back home, be closer to family, lower cost of living, etc. If I were content on staying in Philly for Pod School, my education would not be any different at Temple then the one I am going to receive at Kent.

So start looking at where YOU will be comfortable for the next 4 years, as Temple and Kent will prepare you to become a podiatrist equally.
