Kill my med student?

I am a resident at a well respected hospital where many medical student from all states rotate. Recently I have come to meet the most annoying student of all. I cannot shake him off. He talks my ears off, and tells EVERYONE including the scrub nurse about how he has wanted to be an anesthesiologist since 9th grade. I wanted to be mic jagger when I was in 9th grade. His empty enthusiasm and gunner ways is driving me nuts. I am debating if I should say something. What do you guys think?

I'm a student. I have yet to run my yap more than is appropriate. This guy needs to learn the golden rule of med student rotations... Work hard, keep your mouth shut, and don't trust anyone... your work should speak for itself. My addendum to this is: Be pleasant aka "good morning"," how are you", and "ok, I'll see ya later, have a good day." Any more talk than this leaves you open for attack, as well as shows others how annoying you can possibly be. I'm not saying that you need to be a recluse, but at least don't speak unless spoken to... often. Feel free to print this out, and hand it to said med student.

i have to disagree, because i have received evaluations that said, "student was quiet sometimes". my friends know i'm far from quiet.

Same here. I had an eval that said "quiet, shy," which is quite the opposite. As a med student, you definitely have to let your hard work and courtesy to everybody including the cockroaches on the floor speak for itself. However, you have to show some sort of interest by asking questions and just making conversation like a normal human being. Now, I agree that some gunner students take it to extremes and that can definately be annoying.

I'm an MS III (started two days ago). Thus far I have tried to show enthusiasm and speak up, but only when it's appropriate. I agree that your demeanor and your actions should reveal your interest. If I were you I would tell this guy something, because there is nothing worse and more annoying than students like him. There is a way to stand out and show everyone that you want success without being annoying or steping on others. In the long run it will be to his benefit.

I think that would be HILARIOUS! You could also toss in a line or two about professionalism or something - say he showed up with booze on the breath one morning.

Personally, I see this every day among my classmates. Students who talk **** about every other field and then say with a straight face "Psychiatry is so interesting, I've always wanted to understand how the mind works!" or "Yes, I've always wanted to be an OB/Gyn!" when they have been president of the surgery interest group for 3 years...

I stand by my comments. As the OP stated, this student has obvious "empty enthusiasm and gunner ways." People appreciate honesty and effort. When I'm a resident, if a medical student tells me they have no interest in doing Anesthesiology but would love to learn how to intubate, I'll help them out. Somebody who is clearly sucking up to earn the H just so they can get into Dermatology is going to get burned down...

OK so first...... I've had my battles, kicked some a**, Honered my clerkships, and oh Oh yeah I’ve already landed the job, so before you get your panties in a twist, get your facts straight,I am a resident. I've already had medical students like this... I speak from
experience. Who cares how much brown someone has on their nose, it all comes out in the end....so why stress?
So my “high and mightiness” comes from dealing with colleagues in the past who are jack o** with the same mentality as yourself…it’s a little scary….heh buddy it’s a free world rock on …just my two cents…. Good luck with rest of med school

Killing is better than failing them. Once they're dead, they won't come back. If you fail them, they will have to repeat the rotation, and may surface again to haunt you or another colleague.

good advice. pimping always used to shut me up.

i had an awesome med student today, though. she mostly only spoke when spoken too, was great with the patients, wasn't timid, tried to get her feet wet. considering she was a ms3 on day-2 of the rotation, i was even more impressed. i pimped her a little, and she knew her stuff. so, we had a great day. working with her again tomorrow. looking forward to it. all med students should be like her.

Update on the annoying student...

Today, I almost got stuck with him but by the grace of god, my attending introduced me to another med student. she had the face of an angel and a body that just wouldnt quit. I guess she was my reward for putting up with that jackass....perhaps i should start another thread: "wed my med student"

Wow Annette, how did you get to be a resident without being a student first? You must have been born with your degree! We can't all be so lucky. Some of us actually have to go through medical school to become doctors first.

Please try to remember you people are very fortunate to be in the field you are in and there are many of us lowly piss ant students who some day would like to enter YOUR field to become YOUR colleagues.
