I'm going to be volunteer at a vet hospital during the summer starting tomorrow and I'm a bit nervous. I volunteer at a vet clinic during the school year so you would think I wouldn't be nervous.

But for some stupid reason I'm nervous. I can be soft spoken when I first meet new people but I'm really outgoing once I get comfortable. Don't get me wrong, I'm super excited to start! I just don't want to give off that impression that I'm soft spoken. :\ Any tips?

Don't worry too much, everyone's nervous at first! Give it about a week, maybe less for yourself to get the hang of things.

I'm the exact same way; what works for me is that whole "fake it til ya make it" motto. Plus, like Gwenevre said, everyone is nervous at first!

But seriously, just relax and be yourself...it'll be fine.

Don't worry about being soft-spoken! I'm soft-spoken and kind of shy, and it was awkward at first, but it gets better.

What I did, to help get over it is this: stop worrying about it. Don't let yourself obsess over it, because that'll only make you appear even shyer. Ask questions - not just to the vets, but the techs and receptionists - and if it makes sense in your situation, offer to help out. Focus on how awesome an experience it is, because going in with a positive attitude will automatically make you seem less awkward.

I am ALWAYS a shy person at first, but I try to loosen up a bit by making small talk, asking some questions, asking if there's anything to do to help out. Idk if this is the norm, but I've found that all the vets I've worked with, they enjoy when I ask questions about how they got into the vet field, about their journey, etc. it's easy to ask where they went, if they liked it and such... People like when their accomplishments are recognized haha and it can give you insight and maybe a different point of view! I also try to make a habit by (attempting) to remember names. I'm usually horrible with names but when I learned to say hi "bob" to the vet techs or receptionists, they usually respond well and made it a point to remember my name too. So now I'm always greeted with a "good morning swingnsave!" And it makes me feel more welcomed 🙂

Thanks everyone!! 🙂 Looking forward to tomorrow!

When I first started shadowing I just made sure to introduce myself to every new face "hi, I'm Rachael by the way, I'm just shadowing here !"
