Anyone else feel like he/she seems to be the king/queen of waitlists??

I ended up going to 11 interviews... with a whopping 8 waitlists. Not complaining at all as I did get in somewhere else where I'd be happy, but I thought this distribution of post-II outcomes was pretty amusing. It also probably means that I generally don't perform that well at interviews, but just got lucky with a few schools haha.

5/7 on waitlists so far. I think it just shows how random the process can be once you get to the interview stage. There's a lot of moving pieces that factor into the final decision.

Looking at your past posts, I feel like the 3 schools that you did get in probably weren't out of sheer luck though...idk if UMass is difficult to get into, but Hopkins and WUSTL certainly didn't admit you accidentally lol.

I was on 3 last cycle and got 3 beautifully written rejections! Great knowing "hey you're awesome but not enough to be a doctor, send us more $$$$ and apply again, Cheers!"
I can potentially beat you after this cycle: 2 WL with no acceptances last cycle + 2 more WL this cycle. It would be a total of 4 useless WL if I don't get in 🙁

21 secondaries, 15 II's, 3 acceptances so far. Maaaaaaaybe I'm not so good at interviewing. I guess I will be heavily investing in coaching, mock interviews, etc, when it comes time for residency interviews.

I remember you! I pm'd you how awful waitlists are...I recognized the avatar pic you have 😛.

Waitlists suck.
Just let us in, we're gonna be great doctors.

Sending lots of love to you guys!!:biglove:

Guys don't beat yourself up for the WL:A ratios. Many schools use WL for everyone not admitted right away, and many schools admit a minority of interviewees. Getting a few WL per admit would be a pretty normal outcome if we ran cycle sims on chance.

I was literally just thinking I need a coach for residency interviews haha.

Same. Just recieved my 5th WL out of a total of 5 MD interviews and 2 DO interviews. Still have 1 MD and 1 DO to go. I've been working a lot on my interview skills so the last one was a surprise. Hopefully one turns into an acceptance...

I read somewhere on SDN that some schools only review LORs after the interview so now I'm paranoid that I have a red flag in a LOR somewhere

This is terrifying considering I went 3/3 for Waitlists this cycle and have yet to hear back from one interview, but that was at Einstein where they interview 1300 damn people.

Most people only get a single accept.

Congrats on the accept, though. Now go ready my post on guide to med student success.

Feeling ecstatic about my 2 acceptances, but also really wondering like @Gurby if I should start prepping *now* for residency interviews! 12II, 2 acceptances, 6 waitlists; one post-II rejection (and still waiting to hear from three schools, so those are likely not acceptances).

You all make me feel a lot better. 8 II, two acceptances, 4 waitlists, waiting on 2 more and expecting waitlists. Of course I'm so happy that I'm going to be a doctor, I just thought I might have a better idea about where at this point!

I have confidence that the cycle will work out for us in the end 🙂

Guys... please don't take this the wrong way, but I am genuinely curious of how this happens

I have no idea how people can go on so many interviews and be put on the wait list at all of them... the odds of that are so low (I am praying for all of you to get off the WL!!)

I am far from a rock star, but I have been accepted at all the school I interviewed at. Before the cycle, I did not think I would get in anywhere (below avg stats). I kept telling people "if I get one interview, I know I'll get in ." I have always been a confident person and felt like I interview well, but is there really that big of a difference in interviewing skills between someone with 5+ WL and 5+ acceptances? (Adcoms please chime in!)

Advice to all of you with upcoming interviews: smile a lot, be friendly, be confident. Sell yourself.. you got this! 🙂

I'll throw in my two cents. I had 6 II in total, and ended up with 1 acceptance, 4 waitlists, and 1 post II reject. When you mentioned "if I get one interview, I know I'll get in", I would say I certainly considered myself in this same category before the cycle started. And yet, I had vastly different results than you.

If I've learned anything from this cycle, I have just realized how difficult medical school admissions is, including post interview. Now perhaps my own perception of myself is off, but I was surprised to have the post II percentage that I do. To qualify myself, I am someone who has worked in sales, teaching, and management for years. I am very comfortable speaking with others and talking in almost all capacities, and practically thrive on it. All this considered, my post II still was low. I was even told from several of the schools that interviewed me that I had excellent interview scores (no joke, I called and asked!). Yet, I still found myself on 4 waitlists.

My own theory is that, at least at the schools I've interviewed at, the interview is a major component of the admissions process, but it does not necessarily make or break an acceptance, as a lot of people on here might think. At least, this was my experience with the process. I am fully willing to acknowledge that it is possible I am overconfident in my abilities, but after receiving the results that I have and the feedback that I have, I have a different perception of the interview process. I also just think that med admissions is getting more difficult every year. Currently, though, I don't think it is so bizarre when I hear about an applicant with many II but fewer acceptances.

Just my two cents. Regardless I am SO happy to just have one acceptance!

Thank you SO much for your reply. I felt that this process has been extremely humbling, but your post helped put it in a different perspective. I feel even more grateful for the opportunities I have been given. Congrats on your acceptance to medical school 🙂
