Hi can anyone comment on the stats of in state versus out of state accepted applicants to kumc?

also what is the number of applicants in state versus out of state and the number of accepted in state versus out of state??

THANKS A LOT FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN PROVIDE!!! I am having a some difficultly running down this information.

Kansas, like most other medical schools (with exception to some private schools) heavily favor in-state applicants. Though I'm not sure what the exact numbers are, the book that AAMC provides will have the exact numbers for you. Kansas is my number one choice, though matriculation for me is a few years off and from my research and conversations with their administrative personel, I know that Kansas residents have first preference, followed by individuals with ties to Kansas, followed by qualified out-of-staters. I plan to move to Kansas and get resident status before applying. Best of luck...

Kansas favors in-state applicants pretty heavily. I live just a few miles east of the kansas missouri border (in missouri) and I heard they might consider me anyway since I'm so close...I don't know though. Anyway, good luck! KU is a good program.

hi,

i also live on the missouri side, but KUMC is like a 25-minute drive from my house.
i heard that KU obviously favors KS residents (big time) but kansas city residents are considered too. or if you go to high school in kansas, have family there, or some other close tie. in fact, their secondary asks about where you've lived for like the past 10 years or something, i can't remember exactly, but they ask you to state where you consider home, which place impacted you the most, etc....it gives you the chance to demonstrate "close ties" to the state of KS.

good luck, hopefully we can all be future classmates 🙂

hey mizzoumd, heard anything from MU?? i got a letter about confirming my state of residence, then a letter saying i would be considered a MO resident, then nothing....

I'm not applying this year...I'm just here for undergrad! Good luck though!

Hey guys, thanks for the comments so far,,, i was kinda looking for any stats or whatever about the differences between the 2 of them.

also, so you are going to become a resident before you apply? how does that work??

hi again.

i have a copy of this year's MSAR at home. it has the stats. i'm at work (working hard, obviously) and can't remember them offhand, but it's very low for out-of-state - something like 94-98% in-state.

i'll try to remember to look up the exact #'s & post them tonight.

i will tell you one thing. If you are out of state and recieve a secondary application from them (and have no true ties to the state) then it's a HUGE deal.

And once you get an interview they make no distnction between you and in state applicants.

Much of what has been said on this thread isn't really true. This is the real deal (straight from a member of the AdComm). KU basically looks for two types of students, KS residents or those with "strong ties." Being from Missouri is not a strong tie. Going to KU/KSU is. Having a parent/grandparent/sibling be an alumni of KUMC (not necessarily KU undergrad) is.

That's all gospel truth, here is speculation. If I were out of state (which I am) and I had no KS tie (which I do since I go to KU and both my parents went to KUMC) I wouldn't consider applying to KUMC w/o 3.8+/33+ ...

And by the way, rock chalk jayhawk.

When KUMC says their filing deadline for amcas is Oct 15th, does that mean that my amcas should be verified and transmitted to KUMC by that date? That seems to be a pretty early deadline for a state school.
I lived in kansas for about 2-3 years when I went to high school there. Also, my first cousin graduated from KUMC is 1993. Do you guys think that these little titbits are strong enough ties to kansas?

do you have any idea what chances you have for an interview if you do in fact recieve a secondary, being out-of-state?

From 2003 MSAR:

Applicants 414 (in state) 929 (out of state)
Applicants interviewed 315 (in) 89 (out)
New Entrants 156 (in) 19 (out)

wow, so they interview nearly all of the instate applicants and half of them got in!

plus, lots of other KS residents might have been accepted but chose to attend somewhere else. that stat above is the # who actually attend...so if you're a KS resident your odds of actually getting an acceptance are probably even higher!

I woudn't bank on KU being a sure thing. I don't know of a single person in my interview group who got in last year. And at my undergrad school there were alot of us who didn't get in. And we were all over the board as far as competivness goes.

Am I correct to assume that you and your whole group were all Kansas residents??

Hey guys, they've handed out acceptances to EDP applicants, maybe they can start inviting us regular decision people to interviews now!😛
