Anyone know anything about the ER residency programs in KY? I think UK and Louisville are the only two. I've heard that Lexington is a nice place to live but other than that, don't know much about the program at UK. I looked at scutwork.com, but there are no reviews of either. I alos looked at UK's web site, but based on the graduation dates of the residents, I'd say it's a bit out of date.

Specifically, how is the quality of teaching, what are the facilities like, how well prepared are the residents, what is the overall experience like? Trauma? Peds? etc.

Same info for U of L please?

jsmith123,

Don't have a lot of specifics on the programs (this is the internet though and word on the street is just as good) but being from the area and working in the field it does seem that U of L has the better rep and the stronger program (think they're close to one of the first). U.K. did have some issues earlier which did lead to a gap in the graduates you were seeing. Not sure how dedicated they are to EM overall, though they due have one brand-name member. Of course Lexington is a very nice place to live, you've got the Cat's, Ashley Judd and Keeneland. Louisville....well...it's still in KY, and the cards suck. (Go Big Blue!). 😎

Are you referring to Dr. Stapczynski (sp?)? He's an editor along with Tintinalli of the big EM text. If so, I've heard that he actually left the program recently. I'm not sure where he went to, but I hear that he left.

I have heard that they've only got a few full-time faculty though....a bit worrysome.

Be very afraid of the University of Kentucky's EM program, unless they have done some serious work.

I graduated from UK last year, and when I left, they were down to five full time faculty, as four of them left at once, including the program director. The new program director is trying very hard and he's a really nice guy, but I'm not sure how far away from probation they're going to be able to stay unless some things change there (not the least of which is the total lack of administrative support the ED gets). I like all the residents and the faculty members who were remaining, and don't get me wrong, they're nice people. I just worried about my program shutting down on me if I stayed there.

Lexington isn't a bad place to live at all, and I was perfectly okay during my eight years there. I would also add that your pathology there may be quite limited, as Central Baptist and St. Joseph's Hospitals are both within a couple of blocks and are both Top 100 stroke and heart hospitals, which UK has to compete with.

And Stap took off to be the chair at Maricopa.

I don't suppose to know more that jpgreer13 if he just recently graduated from UK (by last year did you mean '03), but as an incoming EM intern at UK I feel the need to offer my 2 cents. When I interviewed there they were very straight forward that they were recruiting more faculty, but at the time I interviewed I believe they had 6 or maybe 7 full time faculty. It is a small department (18-20 beds I believe) and at that time they had enough faculty for double coverage at the busiest times. They were also very frank that cardiology was a weak point, but I believe they had a new chair who was pushing for more cath's and they supplemented your education with 2 months out at a community ED where cardiology was a strong point. I was most impressed by the people, both staff and residents, and with the schedule which was heavy in EM months. I felt like it was a laid back atmosphere and that the staff they had were strong and the program was in good hands, and that is why I ranked them highly. Again, this is all based on the interview and my memory of it, so it could be wrong. I will be happy to give more info in a few months once I have started and have more first hand knowledge.

Dr. Stapczynski has joined us here at The Copa.
