Hey guys,
I just got a full-time job as a laboratory assistant at a medical diagnostic lab. I am having a difficult time describing the job in my secondaries. SInce I have no prior experience, I will be under training for a month...
I recently graduated from my University and since most schools ask questions about the gap year, I was wondering to what extend should I describe the job?
Thanks!

What department are you in? Micro, histo, coag, blood bank? You should be able to just explain your tasks...For example, "I am responsible for culturing patient specimens...." "I process specimens and make sure the proper test was ordered and the specimen is in the appropriate transport medium..."

My job responsibilities include
- entering requisition data into computer creating an accessioning record
- preparing specimens for testing by centrifuging tubes for tests requiring serum or plama
- distributing specimens to appropriate departments for analysis
- other tasks as assigned

Thanks for replying

I Just got the job on 9/25/10 and my job officially starts on 9/28/10. According to the job description document that was handed to me, I will be mainly preparing specimens for testing, producing bar codes, will be entering patient info in the computer (including the ICD-9CM codes), etc.

I'm not sure why you're stressing out about this, but I guess everyone gets freaked out about completing their application properly. I would describe the job in as much detail as you have available to you about what your duties are, and then in your interviews you can explain your experience up to that point.

Relax, they will be able to tell that the job is new to you based on your employment dates. 😉
