I was trying out different brand of lab coats and I found there was a huge difference between them. Some are fit, feels like I’m wearing a nice suit, and makes me look good. Other look like I’m wearing a cape made of white bed sheet. I didn’t buy any since my hospital will give me 2 free coats, but I have the option of buying my own. Is there any brand of lab coats you recommend for men? Some seem to have that belt thing in back, but I’ve only seem women wear them at the hospital. Also what is the ideal height; above, at or below the knee? (Most seem to be 38-41 inches)

Why would you spend money on something they'll give you for FREE?

I agree... All your lab coats will have blood or coffee stains by the end your first month anyway. I already got 4 and it's not enough! Buying one is a waste of money.

Seems like he cares what he looks like and is bracing himself for a receiving a FREE cape.

This will the last thing on your mind one week into internship.

I used to never care about white coats. I was the guy who washed his coat once a month and only when it was stained. Then during interviews I ran into a PD who was wearing a really nice one so I asked him about it. He said he had it tailor made. I admit it sounded excessive, but the difference between that and normal ones are like polyester checkered suit vs Italian woolen suits.

Since I'm severely short on money (moving for residency is expensive), I'll stick to the ones my hospital provides.

Agreed. Those coats get filthy fast, are MRSA laden, and merely something to stow all your crap in for a few years. If they give you 2-3 you just cycle them out and clean them every month or so. Crazy to spend good money on something like this.

This is how we will differentiate ourselves from other midlevels in long white coats, ponchos/capes! That PD can have a nice white coat because he is a PD and probably hasn't disimpacted someone or dealt with a patient freshly intubated honking all over you (though put a contact gown on at least before that.. seriously)
