i used to wear a sweater with at least a t-shirt underneath it to labs that "required" white coats. i would walk in with it on, then say "oh, i'm too hot" and take it off. (the coat, that is)

i have always hated the white coat thing. it's silly. you mean to tell me that the $20 coat from the bookstore or scrub shop is more professional looking that an armani suit? get real.
if you're actually working with dirty stuff, then by all means, cover up with the coat....but to call it "professional" and require it for classroom work. spare me !!!
colleges should offer workshops on professional appearances that include dress, make up, hair, etc if they are serious about looking "professional". students should be taught how to look like they mean business; a silly coat doth not make the man!
