Does anyone have a list of what schools require labwork and which ones dont? i.e wich ones require students to do all their own crowns from start to finish all four years? I know Tufts does and some other schools let you use an inhouse lab.

Interesting topic if you ask me. Seems like it would be a royal pain in the ass and time consuming to do it all yourself. However, it also might go a long way towards developing your precision to a high degree and make you a better dentist in the long run.

Any thoughts?

I believe NOVA and U.Washington require you to do the first crown, etc and after you've done one you will send it to the lab from there after. I can understand why some schools might want you to do everything, but it just isn't economical for us dentists to do our own lab work. Dentists should be focusing more on clinical/patient care, not lab work that 99.99998% of us are gonna send to the lab or have our assistants handle.

get the Asda handbook on the dental schools. it lists grad requirements as well as in house or out lab work. I am going to go to temple. I think that in house lab , as much as it can be a pain helps you in the long run and after doing it yourself, your gonna be taking some damn good impressions to send out, vs inconviencing your patients. This is the general concensus that i hear from dentists that have gone through programs with inhouse lab

Temple have you do all your labwork from start to finish.
UCSF, a traditional school, a big DIY too. However, I heard that if you have porcelain crown, you can send it outside or to the school lab.
How many people go to see a student dentist can afford a porcelain crown. I think it costs half of the price that patients have to pay if going to private practice ($400 vs $800).
BU and UOP let students send lab works out after the first few crown.

Actually- you send out all lab work at UOP to make crowns/dentures. You can elect to do your own gold crowns @ UOP. I loved working with wax and casted a few on my own- it's a lengthy process; but you control it. And the wait time for your patient is MUCH shorter...and you get to the requirement all the much faster! (I finished 85% of my requirements by Oct of 3rd year that way!!) You do NOT have to make your crowns liek some schools (casting, baking porcelain, etc...)- just fabricate model work to send to the lab (that is a pain though- just do it fast and by the book and you'll have no headaches)
