Ladies, what do you think of tan or brown colored suits? Is it a bad idea?? I know almost everyone sticks to black or dark blue or gray, but is a lighter color a no no? I think I will look much better in a lighter brown or perhaps a light gray but I don't want to stick out like a sore thumb. Do you think adcoms will even care?

For example, I love this suit from Banana Republic:

http://www.bananarepublic.com/browse/outfit.do?cid=8615&oid=OUT00449

However, I definitely don't want to give an unfavorable impression by being the only person not wearing a dark suit...

I suggest you wear whatever makes you feel your best. I personally own a grey suit, and at my last interview, I was one of a small number of interviewees not wearing black. Sometimes, it behooves you NOT to blend in. The only downside to not wearing a dark color is that if you spill something on yourself (during lunch, for example) it's much harder to disguise. Just something to consider if you happen to be a messy eater...

will you feel more or less confident by looking different from everyone else? i guess it comes down to personal choice. at my last interview, i was the only one not wearing a black suit, and i felt kinda special

Wear what looks best on you. I wore a tan suit. They honestly do not care as long as you look nice.

hmm this thread made me think about the sorority girls at my school--ladies skin, tan or light? for interviews

I think a tiny little halter top, a skirt that allows the interviewers to see your kidneys, and six-inch heels will do the trick.

Oh, you're interviewing for med school! Sorry I had StipperForums.com open in another window. Got a little confused I did.

Hey! I tried that suit on at Banana Republic yesterday! hot suit. The only problem with it was I looked washed out (I'm way too pale/white) so I went with black. If you can pull it off, I highly recommend that suit. Looks appropriately young professional. 👍

I tend to think darker colors are more professional in the interview setting, but if you will feel confident wearing the tan, I certainly don't see anything wrong with it. It's actually a very nice suit.

Trying to imagine myself as an interviewer . . . I wouldn't hold it against you, and it may actually help me to remember you better. 🙂

I haven't interviewed yet-- but if I did interview and knew that they were going to care more about what color I'm wearing than what my credentials, my professionalism, and my capacity to be a doctor is then I'd say the whole damn thing is lame and wouldn't want to be a doctor after all.

Just remember an interview is your opportunity to shine. It doesn't matter what color you wear-- you're there to give them your all and help them understand why you're the right person for them to pick as the next amazing doctor. The color of your wardrobe is a moot point! If you've got what it takes, you're professionally-behaved, and you're looking your best (professionally), then you have nothing to worry about!

Whatever makes you feel comfortable.

when i first read this, i thought swim suits. darn!

One of my friends back when I was a little freshman had a suit that same color. I though it looked beautiful on her, and she got into med school at a couple different good schools. So, I'd say, go for it. (I look horrible in anything tan so I'm going to be in something dark...)

I am currently in my fourth year of medical school and applying for residency positions. I have been told by many docs to wear anything but a black suit (which I wore for medical school interviews). They say, "Everyone wears black!" Personally, I got a dark brown pin stripe suit. I do think darker suits look more professional (although that Banana Republic suit is damn cute!).

I also interview prospective medical students at my school. Most girls wear black suits, but none of the interviewers seem to care either way. If you're going to wear black, add some color to it instead of wearing a white blouse with it.

Ultimately, wear what makes you feel good about yourself. Exuding confidence on interview day is more important than any color you choose.

Hope this helps! 😉

You might consider a tannish brown or a brownish tan  👍 😕

I think it's fine. A little darker would be a little better, but after some of the outfits I saw on my interview day? Please don't obsess. It's not like it's baby pink or anything. As long as you have on a nice blouse and professional, sensible shoes with your suit (heels are NOT necessary!) you'll look fantastic and knock their socks off.

Hi Safeflower,

I just went shopping for my suit and I went to New York and Company... you could look at their website as well... they have pretty nice suits for less... The tan one from Banana Republic is very nice but if you would like something cheaper I suggest looking at the website for NY&Co... they have a suit that is around the same color....

I have a brown plaid suit and I agree that it is good to stand out from the rest of the interviewers...

good luck.
