Does anybody know anyone from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas that went on to medschool, I've "heard" they have a 75% acceptance rate into medschool if they graduate from the science dept. All I've pretty much done is "heard" good things like i said... but no real proof, anybody know someone who attended there...? appreciate it...

I interviewed with people from Lamar University in at least 3 of my interview sessions, and one is a SDN poster I believe.

Just get yourself a good GPA, MCAT and volunteering/extracurriculars no matter where you go, and you will be set.

My mom finished her bachelors there!

I think on the TX thread a few months ago, somebody said that there was a TX adcom member who graduated from there and apparently gives preference to Lamar applicants.

I graduated from Lamar University in Dec. 2004 and that year there were 8 applicants... 7 of which got in to their first choice school... including me. The other applicant was a post bac and really shouldn't have even applied. Overall the Texas schools seem to love Lamar applicants for some reason.

I wouldn't put too much stock into any colleges claim of getting people into med school. They can manipulate the numbers and fine print and it is pretty dependant on the individual student.

Anyone on this board in or around Beaumont, Tx or attend Lamar University? Just wondering..

I'm a junior Bio major at Lamar right now and yes, the high acceptance rate is true. It's a good school and the professors really do care and are happy to write stellar recommendations for you if you earn it.
We just got a new Bio department head from Penny St. and he's supposed to be changing things up a bit, but it's all for the better.

Yes, to the second question also.
My friend is graduating this year (from Lamar) and she got accepted at UH.

they might prevent mediocre applicants from even applying though, which might account fo rit...I wouldnt pick a UG school based on that though. CHances are all or almost all of thsoe students would have got accepted no matter where they went to school.
