often times lamisil will not be covered by your insurance. There are several other cheaper medications that your insurance should cover. I can't remember the names... if anyone could help out?

just curious... does nail fungus cause any pain? can it have serious consequences or is it just cosemtic?

Yes, the nails can cause some pain due to the fungus. The nails grow up, away from the nail bed which puts pressure on the nail bed. Any kind of direct compression of the nails (eg someone steps on my toes) relly hurts because the nails are not lying straight across the toe.
But there is a huge cosmetic component to it as well. They look horrible and it just makes me feel bad about myself.

I have experience in this area because this seems like a perpetual problem for me. I've heard that insurance companies won't cover Lamasil, but it was never a problem for me. Lamasil like the other anti-fungals can cause liver damage although it is one of the safer meds. About 15 years ago I had to take Nizoral (Ketoconazole) for 6 months and had liver enzymes drawn every month. With Lamasil some doctors won't even get liver enzymes done and some will get a blood draw at the beginning in order to get a baseline and then recheck in the future.

Even if you take lamisil and it goes away for a while, it will probably come back again.....

Have you been to dermatologist? They should be able to give you some prescriptions.

Good Call dr.z! Don't think SDN should be used for medical advice... go to your doctor.

By the way... I hate the lamisil adds I see all over the place! That little funky bug that opens a toe nail and jumps inside 😱

You just don't want to see that add while eating dinner :barf:

Hey,
I've heard that Vicks Vaporub applied directly to the toenails can help clear up fungal infections on the nail - in fact there was a thread on this a while back. it probably can't hurt you and might be worth a try...

I have also heard that you can urinate on your feet to clear up fungal infections... seems the antibiotic properties of urine are great for your feet... but maybe not so great for your shower?

i hope you learned your lesson and wash your feet in the future.

people. stop being lazy, and bend down and wash those feet. don't forget to wash the ass crack too. fungus likes it there.

Novartis loses its patent protection for Lamisil in 2006. If you can wait another year or so, it will be much cheaper.

I have also heard of Vick's vaporub or even vaseline working.

When I had this, my doctor was kind enough to clean out her sample closet and give me a 12 week supply of Lamisil for free. If you explain that you're a poor student, and your doctor likes you, sometimes they take pity on you. And mine gave me a liver test at the start and the 6-week mark. I'm glad I did it, nothing else was working, the fungus went away, and never came back.

Failing that, you could try Robitussin. It works on everything, you just have to let it work in. 🙂

Check if it is covered my your insurance. Lamisil is pretty harmless in a healthy young person like yourself. I was prescribed it and took it for 3 months. I did get a virus while on it, and subsequently lost my sense of taste (everything was like cardboard) until after being done with the medication. Besides that, I had no side effects. The nail that was bad is also clear, and is still clear. (I talked to a drug rep for Lamisil after I had taken it, he said he has only heard of one other person who lost their taste, although it is a reported side effect)

The stuff does work...and my liver is just peachy

Although it might initially be rejected by your insurance, your md can usually call and ask for a prior authorization in which they explain that it is medically necessary for you to take the med and that another drug option is unacceptable. Many insurance companies require a prior auth. because the pt. has not tried cheaper and sometimes effective meds before resulting to lamisil.

Urine is fairly cheap

soak your feet in 3% hydrogen peroxide for 30 mins for a couple of days. 79 cents worth of h2o2 should clear it up.
