Lancet Alcohol Consumption

Same old news, people know it's bad, they'll continue to do it because it feels good, helps them socialize, and has been ingrained in most cultures for thousands of years. There was another study done recently that showed exactly how many months are shaved off of life expectancy per drink. (I think it was something like 6 months less life expectancy per drink per day?).

Found it: Even one drink a day could be shortening your life - CNN

"Compared to drinking under 100 grams of alcohol per week, drinking 100 to 200 grams was estimated to shorten the life span of a 40-year-old by six months. Drinking 200 to 350 grams per week was estimated to reduce life span by one to two years and drinking more than 350 grams per week by four to five years."

The journal article acknowledges how counter their findings are to current thinking and that current guidelines have supported consuming up to two alcoholic drinks (often red wine is particularly touted for health benefits).

I haven't read through the study, but I'm curious as to how much the amount of none benefits the overall population versus arriving at an amount of none to cancel out the negative health effects for those for whom alcohol is problematic.

They even count communicable disease as a health risk of alcohol. They don't elaborate, but I have to wonder if they are talking about decisions people make when drunk that lead to communicable disease? If so, that's a bit of a reach.

That reminds me of when I once sent a FOIA request for all side effects reported to the FDA of Seroquel. They sent me hundreds of printed pages, and it included things like broken legs and pregnancy. Was totally useless data (at least to me).
EDIT: I had actually just requested side effects reported for a particular generic brand (Ranbaxy), but either they can't do that or didn't understand so they sent me everything reported for Seroquel generally.

The article uses as parameter just the alcohol intake.
I argue that how it is spread over the week could make a large difference.
1 glass of wine for every meal is the same intake of 14 glasses on Saturday night and the other days 0 .
It'is not a stretched example, but close to the mediterranean culture of wine vs nordic binge.
