So I am looking for a case for my brand spankin' macbook. What I envision in my head is a case with a hard plastic exterior, a bit of padding, but essentially only a few inches bigger than the computer itself. I want to be able to place it inside my normal backpack (which I have had for over 8 years now!) in addition to a text book or two. Anyone seen such a case, or know of one that is protective but small enough to be placed inside another backpack? Also if anyone has any hidden gem sites for purchasing cases, it would be much appreciated.

You mean a laptop sleeve? If so, there's more here (just filter the results to your liking + search on Amazon/eBay/etc.).

Do an online searcher for "notebook neoprene sleeve" or "laptop sleeve"

You'll find that most of the major accessory manufacturers have some version of a sleeve.

You can either get a laptop sleep (there are lots of generic ones) or I use a hard plastic case from Speck for my MacBook Pro. I think they're a lot better than a sleeve because it protects against minor damage while using the laptop.
