There are lots of threads regarding PDA's, but none for personal computers. I was wondering if any of you would suggest having a computer of your own during pharmacy school. Is there a need to own a computer? Are there many papers assigned? I just don't want to have to buy one if I don't really need it.

i didn't own a comp in undergrad, but it was strongly recommended that everyone get them at my pharm school. i bought a laptop last summer, and i don't know what i would do w/out it! in undergrad, i used on-campus computer labs and roommates' computers if it was urgent. now that i have roommates out of school and live further away from campus, i deem it a necessity. it's a great investment, especially w/so much email communication and online information. good luck!

It's a good idea. At WVU, the 2nd year consists of writing about 5,000 papers mixed in with studying for countless patho, therapeutics, pcol, and med chem exams. I honestly wouldn't have had time to run back and forth between home and school to write a paper.

The computer I have right now is an Emachines Athlon 2200+ I got of eBay last year for $150 and it works perfectly. Don't spend more than $500 on a computer, the lesser setups are all you need.

I brought my desktop from undergrad here. I currently use that as a media station connected to my TV.

I purchased a laptop last spring and this is all I use for papers and such. It makes it a lot easier to do group projects if a couple people just bring their laptops and jump drives. Then again, I am usually doing the typing while half of my group gossips.

I use a laptop as well. SJU gives us an IBM laptop for "free". I can't help but think its included in our tuition though. 🙄

I think you misread something. That's $12,150 per semester for students entering in '05-'06. 😉 Not to mention the cost of living in NYC. 😱

I believe that laptops are required at Western University in Pomona, CA since they opened. Lectures are given via powerpoint I believe ?????

i don't know about that particular school but all of our lectures are given via powerpoint.

i never took my laptop to school unless i had group work that needed to be typed up that i knew in advanced about.

we even had wireless access in class but there really was no point as all lectures were on power point we had a copy of the slides to write on for notes.

If you get a laptop, make sure it's insured under your parents' homeowner's insurance or your own renter's insurance while you're at school. I had my 4-year-old laptop stolen at school and got $2500 from insurance so I could buy a new one. I was kind of glad someone stole the old one because it was a piece of junk.

Meg - You received $2500?!? OMG! That is an insane amount of money, even if you did claim it as new. Congrats on scoring such a generous amount!

Yeah, I bought a pretty sweet Dell desktop with the money.

It was a $5000 IBM thinkpad laptop when I got it back in 2000, so it was depreciated for value, but i still can't believe I got that much.
