Originally, I was not planning on applying to dental school until the 2011 cycle. However, I decided to take the DAT in late October and scored 21/21/22; to which I thought, hell, I should give a try this time around even though I have two labs left to take as prerequisites this spring. I submitted my AADSAS application on November 10, and designated two schools. My application finally was mailed two days ago. Does anybody know of any stories of people getting in with such a late submission or was it a waste of cash?

it really depends on which schools you applied to? what are they?

also, you should consider completing secondary apps if they have any.

what's your cGPA and sGPA? ECs? Research?

Is there any reason you are not applying to programs that have not filled majority of their seats?

Not sure about Harvard but Im pretty sure Maryland gives a lot of late cycle acceptances.

Well, my GPA from my original bachelor's degree in geology is pretty abysmal like a 2.3 or so. I then have been back in school to take all of the prereq's over the past year. I have taken 40 credits now and have a 3.925; I am also continuing class in the . It is interesting what you can do when you finally have a goal. I am still working about 30 hours a week at my job and shadowing when I can (I now have over 50 hours and plan on getting more this winter and spring). I have about 2000 volunteer hours - trail crew in the rockies, feeding homeless, and several other things to long to type. 4 summers and 7 years of school breaks in prostate cancer research and shadowing surgeons. And that is a long list, but that about sums it up.

I would say your chances at Harvard are highly unlikely with your bachelors gpa. Thats going to hurt pretty bad. Whats your overall gpa including your 40 credits and your past gpa combined?

Yeah I applied to those two schools because they were the only to schools that I would be happy going to without the chance to apply to my in state school.

So what is your AADSAS calculated cGPA and sGPA?

Based on what you have told me so far, I would say to apply more schools such as NYU, USC, and more if you really want to try getting in this year.

If you don't want to gamble, you should try to up your GPA more at least ~3.3.

oh believe you me, I am trying to pull up my gpa. I only wish I had tried starting a few years ago, it would have made it a LOT easier now. My cumulative GPA is 2.43. Which is going to take me like 7 years of class to bring up, so I am really banking on a more recent GPA and DAT scores. I have been taking a higher biology courses as well in my prereqs.

Please allow me to be honest. I am not trying to offend you at all.

I would say keep the upward GPA trend and perhaps look into a post-bac or masters program to give you the competitive edge... Schools with post-bac that will grant you a direct admission into a dental school upon successful completion is a plus. For example, SFSU/UOP Post-Bac.

You could try applying to schools with a lower cutoff. But your GPA will definitely give you some trouble. This cycle is ultra competitive compared to the past and I don't see why wasting the money in applying.

ha ha no offense taken whatsoever. I realize that I am currently fighting an extreme uphill battle. I have been to visit my in-state school dean of admissions several times, who gave me encouraging words, but since I had not finished a significant portion of my prereqs at the time of my last visit, advised me to wait until next cycle. I would love to be enrolled in a post-bac program, but cannot gain admissions due to low gpa... so I am taking the exact same classes, just not enrolled in a post-bac program. I am enrolled as a biology major and will have a chem minor at the end of this spring semester.

Do you really see next cycle being any less competitive?

honestly, i don't have any clue. I would say in general its getting more difficult to get in

What you are asking is not late submitting success, this is asking late submitting MIRACLES.
Harvard and UMD are arguably 2 of the hardest schools to get in to. Your DAT scores while are competitive at most schools are actually below average at these two schools.
Harvard is too far a reach, not even sure why you even applied with a 2.4-2.5gpa.
UMD is also known for putting a lot of weight on gpa, so there's almost no way here either.
There are still 2 more weeks to add some schools to your list, if you really want to start dental school this coming fall, i would suggest adding more schools

Sorry, if you are a minority please ignore the above comments and pack your bags, because you will be getting in to at least maryland

My AADSAS was submitted on Nov 17th, and mailed on on December 3rd. I was kinda in the same boat you are, low GPA, and thought I was gonna go for the next cycle, but I took the DAT and did awesome. For me though, knowing it was late, I applied to 23 schools to open up my chances, and I ended up getting 3 acceptances and 1 waitlist. Also, you want to look at schools that put a lot of weight into the DAT, like Columbia for example, they also go somewhat late into the cycle. Pitt is another school that goes late in the cycle. I know from experience that the odds are really against you here, but it is possible. I'd highly suggest applying to more schools. In the long run, out of state tuition isn't really that much more, and having an extra year of working as a dentist will really make up for it.
