I know that everyone holding multiple acceptances is supposed to make their final choice by May 15. What happens if someone chooses a school, but then gets an acceptance over the summer from a school they'd rather go to? Are you allowed to take back your enrollment in the first school? This whole process is so damn confusing.

You're right, it is a bit confusing - but check out (if you haven't already): http://www.aamc.org/students/applying/policies/recommendations.htm

According to rule# 8, if you have accepted a place and it is after May 15, the school that would like to admit you must notify the school that you are already accepted to...

But call me a pessimist - I don't think a med school would go through that much trouble when they already have scores of people on a waitlist...

Who knows, I'm probably wrong.

The way I understand it, this is exactly what happens -- you choose one school to hold on to by May 15th, but you can stay on an unlimited number of waitlists. Then, if you hear from a school you like better, you can withdraw from the acceptance you were holding. This is why there is so much "action" during the summer. However, once you start at a school, I think you have to relinquish all of your waitlist spots, or they are relinquished automatically.

This is all very confusing. I have an acceptence to Chicago Med, but they start very early (July). I'm wait-listed at two other schools I'd much rather go to. So does that mean if I start at Chicago but haven't heard anything from those schools before them, I'm basically "stuck" (for lack of a better word), even though the other schools don't start until August?

Just answered my own question by looking at the link twister posted. As soon as you are enrolled at a med school, no other schools may offer you acceptance. That kinda sucks if a school you really want to go to starts significantly later than one you've decided to enroll in.

I understand your concern, but I suppose that even with backups, we have to be willing to go there, even if others haven't decided. Future applicants should keep this in mind.
