Hi there,

I'm a "late bloomer" (so to speak) for developing an interest in medicine. That being said, I've done a degree in psychology with most of the pre-reqs for medical school done...I'm finishing up my degree, but there are still about 3 courses I need to do for med school. My question has to do with taking only these 3 courses in a fifth year...How do schools view this? Do they frown upon a fifth year? Do they frown upon doing a fifth year without a full course load?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I'm similar to you. I was a psych major and finished up pre-reqs late (through summer school). My guess is as long as you're doing other things as well (which would help your ECs) you'll be fine. Besides, continuing classes for med school shows dedication to your interest in medicine 🙂 (so I hope).

My $0.02: I would think that it's completely understandable. There are plenty of "non-traditional" students who graduate from college, decide they want to go into medicine, then go back to school to do all of their pre-requisites in a post-bac year. It sounds like you will have essentially done the same thing, finishing your degree requirements then continuing on. If you're done with all of the classes going toward your degree, I can't imagine anyone would fault you for not signing up for superfluous classes just to fill your schedule.

As long as the OP has proven capable of handling a full course load, this is most likely true.
