Latest time for asking LOR

What month is the approximate latest time that one would ask for a letter of recommendation while still being considerate enough to allow the recommender to have enough time to write/send the letter?

I have an instructor in mind for a recommendation, but I feel that he/she would not know me very well until I have been in the course long enough.

I asked my profs with about 2-3 weeks to go in the semester. Don't tell them to "take their time" like I did, though.
