I am an osteopathic student who is hesitant to register for the USMLE in January, then end up canceling later on and wasting $600. I have medical bills to pay, and that money could be put toward those instead of a test I don't end up taking. I've done a bit of research and I'm not sure I'm the type of student who would excel on the USMLE. But maybe after studying I might do better than I'm expecting? I just don't know. I'm planning on doing family medicine, but I'm worried I'll get to rotations, really like a specialty, and then not have a USMLE score to apply to those programs. What is the latest you've heard of people registering for the USMLE and still getting a location within a few hours of their home? Are there any other issues I might encounter by registering later that I haven't anticipated?

I live in Washington DC and I received my scheduling permit a few days ago. I was able to book an appointment in Prometric center which is 40 min drive for the end of January.
I think your ability to book certain time and location depends on where you live and how many Prometrics you have around. I have 12 Prometrics within 40 miles. But I don't think that it's the case everywhere.
