We just got a notice about high lead content in candy imported to the US from Mexico. It's candy that is usually sold by catering trucks, ice cream trucks or Mom and Pop stores in Mexican neighborhoods. The info is being put out by The Orange County Register. Something to think about if you have a kid with fatigue, wt loss and other symptoms of lead toxicity.

Also seen in fired grasshoppers imported from Mexico. I don't remember the name in spanish, but they are considered a delicacy. While on an M4 tox rotation in Chicago we saw two cases of this...

mmmmmmm, fired grasshoppers 😱
While on my tox rotation as a student in chicago, they had done an analysis of mexican candies and lead content. If I recall correctly, most of the lead was secondary to contaminations from the wrappers. I guess the factory making all the wrappers had high lead contents in the soil.

Another recent candy trend has been those lollipops laced with drugs. Talk about marketing towards kids.

This just in:

The CDC has just reported that Total Raisin Bran has been found to have extremely high levels of iron in it. (Some reports say you'd have to eat as many as FOUR bowls of shredded wheat to get that much.)
