I have an interview at UVA this October 27. Coming from NY, it's a bit of a trip for me, so I'd like to hit as many schools as I can in that trip. The schools I have completed applications at are Wake Forest, Duke, and Hopkins. Duke was has been complete since 9/9, and the other two have been completed for about 5 or 6 weeks. Is it appropriate to call these schools up to ask them the status of my application to see if they will be offering me an interview (Leaving aside for now how difficult it is to get an interview at Hopkins and Duke in the first place 😛). If my only option is to make a seperate trip for all of them, then that's what I have to do and I'd do it. Have I allowed enough time before calling them up? I definately wouldn't want them to feel bothered by me and make a summery judgement against me, but if I knew not to expect anything from these schools, it'd make my planning a lot better. Should I just call them up and ask "I'm going to be in the area at the end of the month. Would it be possible to know if I'm being offered an interview and schedule it for that time?" Thanks.

Theres no harm in trying.

However: it's a bit close to the date, you haven't been 'complete' at these schools long enough, and NY -> these schools while not next door is not *so* large a distance that these schools are really going to view it as unnecessary hardship to travel again.

So - give them a call and ask, but unless they are unusually efficient and coincidentally have another cancellation at that time, expect the answer to be 'no'.
