I just want to see how other people are doing on their personal statement-- I spent about 1 week (maybe 2 hours per day max) on it so far and it reads pretty complete. I looked on here though and see lots of people spending months writing that thing, makes me a bit worried if mine is up to par. Whats a good length of time one should spend writing it?

The quality of a personal statement does not necessarily depend on the amount of time spent writing it. Everybody writes at a different pace. Some people are terrible writers and need multiple revisions. Others are pretty good and can nail it in a couple of drafts. If you're satisfied with the product and you think it's ready, I'd recommend that you set it aside for a couple of days and don't think about it. Then go back and read it again. If you still like it, then you're ready to go. Of course, it might be worth it to send it to a few people in your life who are willing to give you honest feedback (such as a mentor).

I wrote a lot of drafts that I threw away. The one I actually used took a few hours, and then a few days to get some people to look it over.

I don't like editing drafts. I just keep writing new ones until I feel one with my paper.

It took me about four months of writing drafts and chucking them in the garbage. When I finally got the inspiration for the final version, it was very different from all the other drafts and took about 45 minutes to write. I showed it to several people, including three doctors, and they said, "Don't change anything." So, the answer is, it takes as long as it takes. You may get lucky and have it all done in an hour or your may have to sweat for a few months.

This is what I do as well.
