Least competitive school?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ok so I know all dental schools are crazy competitive but which ones are a little more lenient for an applicant with lower stats?

Maybe Howard or Meharry. Their stats are relatively lower than other schools.

If you're an underrepresented minority. I heard if you're caucasian/asian it's actually harder to get into these schools than other schools.

With the way things are going, people not getting accepted with incredible GPA/DAT scores, in a few years you're not going to see any "not" competitive schools like you're saying.

Oh, yes. That's true. if you are caucasian/asian, then it's actually much harder to get into Howard and Marry. But I thought Howard and Meharry are still a little more lenient for an applicant with lower stats even if you are caucasian/asian. I might be wrong.

im from Cali no!!!!! y does it have to be so hard for CA schools!!

No idea. I am speaking from my own experience too. The first rejection I got is from UCSF...
Yeah I am from Cali too (obvis) and my first rejection was UCSF as well! I don't think there is any easy school to get into these days sadly.

How competitive is dental school though really? At least from my school we have 100% acceptance rate and I was told that it would be pretty easy to get in somewhere.

There is no such thing as an easy school, all are competitive. Schools like Howard have low stats for a reason, look in the ADA book at the ethnicity/race acceptance (hardly no whities or asians) they favore underrepresented minorities which is great I think. Dental school is only going to get harder as more people realize how great the profession is, as far as no residency, high income, little on call, great hours, can own ones own business, ect. Need I say more.

Either you're simply lying or were told this by some idiot with absolutely zero credibility.

Actually no I am not lying, those are the actual stats. I have no reason to lie because I don't even know anyone here. Obviously it's not as easy as it sounds but it's not that difficult, at least I hope not.

I wish I went to an undergrad university that had a 100% placement for students into their respective professional fields of choice...man, that would have taken off a lot of pressure throughout the whole process.

Which undergrad do you attend?? Even Harvard/Yale/Princeton most likely would not have 100% acceptance rate....🙄

Probably a school with an enrollment of 12 that is 1 for 1.

Clearly you must be mistaken about there being 100% acceptance from your undergrad school... unless of course there is like 2 people applying for Dental school from your university and they are the top 2 in your class....

And being from California sucks big time...... our state schools are probably as hard to get into as the IVY league schools.....

Just what I was about say. Every dental school is tough to get into period. Howard and Meharry may show lower stats than the rest of the schools but over the last few years those schools incoming class statistics are rising. Predents.com shows the ADEA 45th Ed. Guide to Dental Schools:
Howard 90 seats 2159 applicants. Not great odds. No matter what yours stats are your competing against 2100+ other people.

Saint Louis University, hardly the top school but grads have pretty good placement. They said 85% get into med school and 100% for dental. You are probably right, I think about 20 people applied/got in. I'm not trying to start anything, I honestly don't know much about dental school and it's not like I have the best stats, I was just curious about admissions.

yea I could believe this... my school is a big state school and up until 2006 had 95% percent of predents getting in somewhere....

This percent could be for students gettin into dental school period. This could mean after two to three cycles.

Can you give us your stats?

those people that are reporting that they got in are the only ones that you are hearing from...you dont know everyone and there may be a lot of people applying that just arent open about it and they may be the ones not getting in

anyone. i am just saying that i thought the same things until i found out a little more about my undergrad.

i was actually at an interview with someone from my undergrad and i didnt even know him so it was an eye opener that i didnt know everyone that was applying just at my small school. also most of the people in my class arent applying right out of school so we dont consider them in those percentages

i am trying not to study and i just keep looking at the same posts...ha

I would rather not say, too embarrassed haha. Sorry.

Either you're simply lying or were told this by some idiot with absolutely zero credibility.

You wont believe what private university recruiters will tell you.

A representative from a well known science school told me they had a 100 percent acceptance rate for pre-dent students who had above a 3.2 GPA:bullcrap:

I really wish it was that easy....

He told me after a couple of weeks school started in my second year after I switched from pre-med, I don't know what he was trying to sell me...

Anyway, sorry for bringing this topic up since everyone just seems to laugh it off. I was just trying to get a sense of rigor/competition.

WELL YOU WERE WRONG!!! GEEZ!!! Just kidding :meanie:.

As has already been said, there are no "easy" schools. But, there are schools that might be "easier" for individual applicants. In other words - if you apply to the right schools, you may increase your chances of acceptance.

So, purchase the ADEA Offical Guide to Dental Schools, spend some time on predents.com and studentdoctor and do little bit of research and you can find the schools that would be "least competitive" for you, individually.

That's what I did and I think it worked out for me. There were weaknesses in my application but I tried to apply to schools that would be more impressed with my strengths than turned-off by my weaknesses.

In the end I got more interviews and acceptances than I really expected.

Yeah applying to dental school will be a cake-walk for you. Shoot for a sub 3.0 GPA and 16 on the DAT and you should be fine - you should be fine, you do come from a "100%" acceptance school.

The rule is to apply to your state school and many private schools thru-out the country. You can also try for out-of-state schools that accept many out of state like Buffalo, Michigan, and Maryland.

Look at www.predents.com

On the main page you will notice the “ranking” scroll menu on the right. You can use it to sort all schools based on GPA, DAT, # of applicants etc. The data is all based off of that ADEA book for dental school applicants. You can use those lists to see where your stats fit in, and which schools rank towards the bottom of these lists.

Jesus, let it go already. I already said that it wasn't my intent to imply my school is better than anyone else's or that getting into dental school was a piece of cake. I just got two different opinions from my advisorS and the people here. Are people here that bitter about dental school that they have to put down others in the process, wow shows your maturity level right there. Anyway, thanks everyone for actual input, I appreciate it.

People here aren't trying to be mean, but we are just shocked that you would think that your school has 100% acceptance rate...even SDNers coming from the best undergrad colleges would not dare say that...
I am not sure what your stats are...but you should try to aim for at least a 20AA and you should obtain a GPA of at least a 3.4 if you want to be competitive for dental school...your undergrad does not matter that much...as long as you are from a 4 year college you are fine....
To answer your question...TRY applying to these schools they are a bit more on the easier side...
NYU
NOVA
TEMPLE
LOUISVILLE (but I was waitlisted....??)
TUFT
OHIO
MIDWESTERN (I have heard this was easier but not sure since I didn't apply here...)
HOWARD AND MEHARRY (if you are a minority...if you are white or asian then do not apply here...)
I Hope this helps! GOOD LUCK! 🙂

Thanks for the help, do adcoms care about the number of schools you apply to? Do they even know?

Do they know? No.

However, some secondaries asked applicants to list all schools applied too. I have also heard of this question coming up during interviews.

Do they care? Who knows

Sorry, I just couldn't help but chime in on the fun. If you will notice I actually did give you "actual input".

If there is one cardinal rule on forums like this it's: don't take anything too seriously.

I think they would know b/c its on your ADDSAS application and its sent out to all the schools....That would be my guess...
Most people apply to 8-12 schools...so if you apply to too many it might look kind of desperate but I am not sure how that works...

I think they would know b/c its on your ADDSAS application and its sent out to all the schools....

True, but that really isn’t part of the application itself. You notify AADSAS where to send the app by checking off schools, and then get to monitor your status at all those schools. I don’t believe other schools have access to all of that.

I’m basing my guess off of previous threads discussing this topic.

I was asked what schools I applied to at interviews and I told them 12 total and asked if they would like to know, they said yeah and I started listing and they stopped writing after just a few. I told them I applied to ones I thought would give me good clinical experience and then some more just incase I wasn't lucky enough to have a choice. I think they understand people want to be a dentist whether they get there by going to their school or not.

On the note of the high acceptance rate. When I was a freshman at my school they told me the year before, 42 people applied and 40 were accepted and then the two others got in the next year. This summer while I was applying they said less people have been applying to dental school which I thought was weird, and maybe 60% were getting accepted.
