HI guys, I was wondering what would happen if I chose not to report my race on the application? I'm asian and I see no disadvantage of leaving it blank, and no advantage of reporting it. any thoughts??

You can feel good about contributing to future ADEA Guide to Dental School stats. It's just a check mark. If I were Asian, I'd slap it down.

my thoughts go like this: if you don't put it, they will assume you are white or asian anyway, and it might make them think you're douchey.

in terms of getting an interview

No. That would be kind of illegal. I would think of it as purely statistical data. There are a few schools whose programs are committed to underrepresented minorities, but that's a whole different story and it's not you.

It is just for statistical purposes. Besides, if you have an obvious last name like Nguyen or Edwards, they are going to know your Asian or White respectively lol.

Of course it's illegal to screen based on race..doesn't mean they don't do it anyway. If you're a smart Asian, definitely report it because they'll think you likely had a tiger-lady mother who instilled hard working values in you....however, if you're an Asian with lower stats, may God help you stand out amongst the thousands of Asian applicants with impeccable stats.

Like it or not, prejudices exist. Play the game or get played.

I am gonna try to sound as polite as possible...

What possible advantage would this give you? The potential (and serious) consequence is you'll look like you don't know your race.... or don't know how to follow easy enough directions to determine your race.

I've been to 5 dental interviews, and I swear, more than 40% of the applicants I saw were of Asian decent.

You can avoid this whole "don't know your race" thing by choosing "Not reported" option or whatever it said.

that option isnt there. it becomes that when u leave it blank, essentially

Your chances as an Asian with lower stats are low...but not reporting your race is also a gamble. If you look at the ADEA guide..acceptance rates aren't very good for those who didn't report their race...but then again, there weren't too many ppl who chose not to report their race.

actually if u look at the adea guide, theres a higher percentage of people who are enrolled not reported race compared to the percentage of people who are enrolled under asian (they're close percentages, but numbers wise u have a better chance), i mean if you want to talk about enrollment numbers here it is. you be the judge:

IDK how it works for dental. But for medical school admissions, every minority group has a leg up over caucasians except for asians (because they are apparently "over-represented" in medicine).

This.

you run a big risk of getting rejected, if asked why you left the field blank, and you answer "because of discrimination", you will get rejected outright for making wild accusations. On the other hand, if you say something like "I wasnt sure this was necessary" you'll be looked upon as someone thats either anti-social, odd, or unable to follow directions. In which case, you'll be rejected as well. Just put the race down and stop trying to "game the system." because you might just lose out due to your paranoia.

Are you actually suggesting he should follow directions and populate the fields accordingly?

I think its harder for Caucasians to get accepted than for ethnic minorities. Mainly, because the majority of applicants are Caucasians. So I would totally put down that you are Asian.

Also, I have heard a lot of applications getting rejected due to minor mistakes on the applications. The thought process of this is, "if they cannot even follow simple instructions on the applications, how good would they be in our school."

I guess im a follower and not a leader. back to the DAT studying I go... Just wanted to rant! lol

Statistically speaking whites and asians should have an equal chance at acceptance because both are considered non-URM, therefore they are competing against each other for the available non-minority seats.

if they wanted it, they should have made it mandatory no? obviously if it was following directions, there would be an asterisk there. otherwise why make it optional? same way theres the 4500 character limit, though you don't lose points for writing less, do you?

what about those that didnt choose to write it, as i included in the pdf link? i see none of you seemed to comment on it.

Just fill it out or don't. Nobody cares. You're the type of person that will fill it out and then blame race on getting denied rather than a lackluster application, so leave it blank.

I don't see a big deal either way.

And good point, schools require a picture and an interview. They will know you are asian.

I'm probably going to get a lot of flack for this, but I'll just say what everyone is thinking:

Asian guys are picked for their brains, not their looks. Even if you were an attractive half-asian, I wouldn't bank on your looks getting you in :scared:. I don't know if you've creeped Minnesota's facebook groups, but if you haven't, good luck competing with smarter, better looking versions of Brad Pitt.

Why are you singling out Asian guys as being picked for their brains. I would assume everyone accepted into dental school is picked for their brains.

I'm saying that looks don't (usually) play a factor when it comes to Asian male applicants. As long as they're not sloppy looking, they're fine. I'm willing to bet that us Asian guys aren't picked because of our sexy anime hair and thick-rimmed D&G glasses....Asians are Asians. Check out Columbia's youtube videos of their class. -__- \\//....clearly picked because of their brain power.

Attractiveness may, however, play a role for other races, in addition to their brains. Really hot white people can get away with (slightly) lower stats...Asians can't, and I'm OK with that since I don't look Asian at all!

hmmm yea i rmbr thinking this question when i filled out my aadsas
only bc i didnt really know what to list myself as
at the end of the day, when they see my name/ last name, they will KNOW im not the typical "white" even tho thats wat i am for dental app purposes...or w/e....and they can determine my race/origin from my name most probably. so its nbd if u put ur race down or not, theyll eventually figure it out so why not just put it down?😎

Here's the thing. If you have a strong application, you are not going to be denied based on your race. They will see it once they interview you anyway. Good luck.

Question:

If the school is purposly avoiding Asians (ridiculous I know, but bare with me plz), wouldn't it go back to its anti-Asian roots as soon as you step into the interview and they realized you "tricked" them by not populating the race?

why do we have to bring religion into this? or why are we feeding the trolls request for a dumb question? Sorry to sound harsh but this is probably the most useless thread on sdn.
