How many leaves is one entitled to typically in a residency program?
None, unless there are medical circumstances (you're ill, pregnant, etc.) or other serious circumstances.

Once you miss more than 3 months, you must extend your residency by an entire year. I think the cutoff is 3 months, it could be less though. I remember it being very short.

No but are not there something like casual leaves..........sometimes someone has to go somewhere or sometimes just like that.

Also for illness does one need it documented. what if person has simple cold which i get quite often.......

also how many leaves are permitted for illness

You have vacation time, which varies by program.

Some programs give you sick time and others do not; we are expected for example, to show up for work, and if we are THAT sick (a simple cold isn't severe enough) then we can be sent home if there are others who can cover the workload. Prolonged illness may require you use FMLA or vacation time.

I saw on most websites that vacation time is 3-4 weeks.....can the vacation time be splitted in to like 2 days leave and so on ........or is it like u take whole of vacation leave

I am asking bcoz in my country we r entitled to a fixed no. of leaves and u can take them as u like all at once .....or in any combination and on any occasion or for any cause

Depends on the program. Some require you to take them all at once (ie, a 1 month block), some (like mine) do not allow more than 1 week off at a time and perhaps some (although I've never heard of it) may allow you to take 2 days here and there for the total vacation time.

So it means one cant take 1-2 leaves here and there?

Not usually. You're owned by the program, basically.

My program gives us three weeks of vacation every year which you must schedule in advance. We also get either Christmas or New Years off but this is not written in stone.

If you are on an outpatient rotation you might get the usual holidays off (Labor Day, MLK, etc.) but if you are on an inpatient rotation forget about it. You are only required to get one 24 hour period free from clinical or didactic responsibilty every seven days. If this means that you get off of call at 7 AM and don't have to be back until 7AM the next morning so be it.

As for taking personal days, it is true that you are allowed a certain number of personal days as well as sick days. Realistically however you will be reluctant to take these because on most rotations someone will have to cover for you. This person might be called in from a "light" outpatient rotation to cover your inpatient call.

Nobody ever calls in sick unless they are really, really sick. I mean nausea, vomitting, rigors, night sweat, LOC sick. If you just have a cold and try to take a sick day you are screwing over one of your collegues who may have to cover for you.
