Hi, this is my first post to SDN, and I would like to hear peoples' opinion/experience on this topic.. Leaves of Absences taken during undergrad years (I have been reading the posts for quite a while and I am truly impressed with the amount of information here).
I just graduated from an ivy school with an economics degree, but I always secretly wondered about medical school. Something tells me that being a wall street banker is just not as satisfying and fulfilling as being a doctor. I have not taken any of the pre-med science courses, but I am planning to go into a post-bac program at Rutgers. But before I commit 2+ years into pre-med studies, I have to find out if there is any chance that I will get into medical school at all. The thing is - it took me 7 and 1/2 years to finish college. My grades are a mixtures of As,
one D, and 5 incompletes and 5 withdrawls. I have a 3.8 GPA... but I also took leaves of absence twice. These leaves (although they were officially "medical leaves" for psychiatric reasons) tell the story of someone who can not perform consistently in college. I am afraid that medical school admission board will simply ask me, "If you cannot finish college in 4 years, what makes you think you can finish medical school in 4 years?" Another thing is - I am 25 years old and have never really had a full-time job. Unlike other non-traditional students who have had a career prior to applying to medical school, I have nothing to show for, for my age.
I don't know if I should even try to go through the pre-med studies. I have confidence in my ability to perform well in classes, but I am not sure that others (esp. medical schools) will view my undergrad record kindly.
If anyone has had similar experience (or know someone who does) please reply to this post. I would be very grateful if I can hear some opinions/stories from you.
Thanks.
