Ok im in a pretty cushy job, about to leave it for med school. i have not told anyone yet. anyone in a salaried job that has told everyone they are leaving?? what was the response?? i dont want to burn bridges because my brother may be doing this possiblly later on, i dont know, but either way, i dont want it to go over to bad... any thoughts??

How long have you been working there? I would suggest you just tell them asap so they will have as much advanced notice as possible. I'm going to be in the same situation as you and I'm just planning on telling them as soon as I know and cross my fingers that they won't hold any grudges. Good luck and congrats on your admission!

about 1.5 years.... 😕

If you had just recently got hired, it would be pretty shi**y of you to quit. I think since you've worked there for a while, they won't take it so hard.

I had an uber sweet job with the Disney company in Orlando. A job most people wish they could do if only for a little bit.

I was in a job that I didn't use my molecular biology degree at all in. I gave it up to go back to medical school and get my MPH. I haven't regreted it one bit, though I still miss some perks. 🙂

I actually gave my job about 6 weeks notice. I was treated very well and I felt that that was an opportunity for them to find a sutible replacement for me. I felt two weeks is cool if its not a heavily trained aspect but the more responsibility and more training you have the harder you are to replace.

Be honest with them and keep up the good work even though your leaving and they'll be fine.

I did the same... left a very good 6 figure income... Although I owned the company, I kept it on the down low for 1 1/2 years to not hear discouraging remarks from people like ' You're crazy for leaving that income for school... .... ..... " Keep it low until you're really involved in school and then tell people. Nobody will be mad at you and it's really not burning bridges. Once you're involved, people's remarks become more positive.

I agree, you need to tell them so they can find a replacement. I have been a partner in my business for the past four years and it makes for a smoother transition if you give them ample time. I also am giving up a six figure job for medicine. I was worried they would be upset with me but everyone was excited and wished me well. Plus my buyout will basically help me pay for medschool.

I had the same experience. I work as a clinical pharmacist at University of Michigan Hospitals. I told my boss back in December and they were very happy I gave them some time to look for and train my replacement. Many people in the working world change jobs for better careers, I think most people understand that. Most of my collegues were happy for me. I think you should give your boss the courtesy of informing them of your plans so they can prepare. Just my 2cents.

Tell them as soon as you can. They will have more time to replace you.
I work at a large healthcare/pharmaceutical company and I told my manager 4 months ago and they appreciated being told early.

Tell 'em early? What about the lame duck thing? Besides I don't want them watching me to see if I'm buggin' out early. Corporate America had my skin for 7 years, not once did I see one of my coworkers get more than two weeks notice they were going to be "let-go". Your relationship with your boss is a relationship with a corporation. Never confuse the two.

I think that you should tell them as soon as possible. The longer you wait (ie the closer to when you leave) the more likely your boss is to react strongly (over react). At least that is what I have seen in the past. My boss has known since I started applying to medical school that there was a chance that I would be leaving. My whole lab was pulling for me and were very excited when I got accepted, hopefully your coworkers will feel the same way and wish you well. Good luck...i'm sure you will be fine, and if they arn't happy for you they have a problem. 🙂

well like, my job is pretty nice, but doesnt take a rocket scientist to do, so training people is not that big of a deal, plus they work stuff there such that if they were to fire anyone then the work we had done would be easily understandable by a new hire. plus most of the other ppl that work with me were hired within the past year... i am thinking about a months notice would be sufficient. that way if i get fired then, then i have only lost a months salary and i should still save face anyways....

I told my supervisor that I planned to go back to school a week ago, and that I was planning to stay only till the end of July. He was cool about it, appreciated the fact that I gave them ample time to find a replacement. However, he said he won't be making any formal announcements about it until I give him my letter of resignation, which he recommended that I give to them 2 weeks before I officially quit.

Although my boss knew that I had gone to several interviews, I didn't tell him that I am actually going to med school until this week. This gives him two months to get used to the idea and I have time to help hire and train my replacement. I think it's the right thing to do, but I work at a university, not a big corporation. I'm an admin assistant and I didn't think I would feel too sad to leave my job, but I've gotten pretty attached to my boss. The announcement for my position went out yesterday and now I'm a little sad. Not too sad to stay here, but I'll miss him. 🙄

Well, I teach at a community college (or should I say "taught") and I told my boss at the beginning of the semester that it would be my last with the school.

I think when you tell your boss depends on the job that you're in. I knew that they typically have difficulty finding someone willing & able to teach the classes I was teaching, so I gave them plenty of notice. Thankfully, he kept it under his hat until after Spring Break. Only those people directly involved in hiring were aware that I was leaving. After Spring Break, the word got out--don't remember exactly how, but it spread like wildfire--and I was constantly being approached by students & staff wanting to know why I was leaving and where I was going. That alone would've been reason enough to wait a little longer!

If your job doesn't require any special knowledge other than OJT, then there's no reason to give more than a few weeks' notice. In case you haven't noticed....it's a lot easier to find an employee than to find a job these days!

Willow (still looking for a job for hubby........*sigh*)

I don't have any parrots, I'm not that bad. I have seen him 13 times in concert. I'm missing him this year, though, because I'll be in Florida when he comes to Atlanta (next week - yay vacation!!). So, I'll be wasting away in my very own margaritaville 😀

It's my parents' fault. I remember dancing around with my mom when I was little to Jimmy's records. Later on, I went to my first Jimmy concert with my dad when I was 13. I guess it's in the genes 🙄
