Leaving a significant other :-(

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have seen several posts and spoken with a few of my friends who are going to vet school that say their SO is amazingly supportive.

Unfortunately, sometimes within the same breath they also mention that the SO has joked about not wanting them to get in, pass a class, get an interview.... basically a "joke" that seems to belie the said persons supportive attitude.🙁

I was just wondering what people think about this...IMO people often say jokes that are hurtful like this when some part of them actually wants to say the statement for real. Is it because the SO is scared of how vet school will effect the relationship or is the SO not truly supportive?

For those that have broken up were these jokes a part of your relationship?

I know that my husband would not do well without me, so taking him along is a huge concern in my choice. In a few years he'll be able to, I think, get a well-paying job almost anywhere, so I think things will work out great! He's supportive of my choices, as long as he's going along. 🙂 He never jokes about things that could be hurtful or negative. He knows it'll be hard, and I'll be distracted. We'll make time for each other, and he'll make the moolah while I errr... rack up loans. Haha.

My husband does make "jokes" that I remind him are not too funny to me - but it's pretty much silly attempted bribes to get me to stay (and not go back to KS). Our relationship has been really good and very strong though, and I recognize the fact that this is just him blowing off some steam and expressing some of his feelings.

I can't expect him to be totally gung-ho ra-ra-ra all the time, when we're 1300 miles apart and married. And 99% of the time, he's totally supportive. I guess there are some SO's who ARE completely, totally 110% supportive. My husband will make the jokes here and there, but ultimately, his actions and behavior have proven his support, and I just remind myself that THAT is what matters.

Here's hoping we will continue to stay strong and as happy as we can apart!
