Hello SDN

If you interviewed at a med school, and you happened to work there (so you're in the building every day), would you walk down to admissions where the administrators know you (you've been around for a few years in this hypothetical situation) and hand deliver the thank you card for your interviewer instead of wasting time and money finding postage and a post office?

Assuming you went through with that, and you know the administrators at the admissions office know you by face and name and have helped you and other applicants during interviews and other meetings with admissions, do you write an additional thank you card to the admissions office staff for their help during the interview process? Or is that unnecessary? One might feel like he or she is leaving people out by handing an administrator a thank you card for someone, when they've also been a part of your admissions process. On the other hand, it's their job to schedule meetings and write emails regarding admissions and it might be overly unnecessary to give a thank you card.

tl;dr:

If you're hand delivering your interviewer thank you card to admissions is it unnecessary and odd to give a thank you card to the admissions staff as well, or is it a welcomed, thoughtful, and appropriate gesture

Thank you notes are just a polite gesture. There's not really a wrong way to go about doing them, at least as far as I know. I'd say write the note for the admin staff. It'll make them happy that you did, and then you'll be happy because they are 😀

Despite the convention, not handing out a thank you card to anyone is welcomed and appropriated, as well.

Why don't you just write the card and throw it in their mailbox at the office? No need for postage or any of that, and it is still very professional way of delivering interdepartmental mail.

That seems like the perfect solution - and it may be in my situation, but I'll have to double check. I have heard in the past that some schools have rules about only contacting your interviewer post-interview through the admissions office, I would imagine most don't so that should work. Thanks 🙂
