I'm starting at LECOM-B and I was wondering if there is anything I should do to prepare. I have about six months before the start of classes and not a lot to do, so I wanted to start on reading. However, I am more concerned about anything by which I might be blindsided or should have done sooner. Any thoughts?

....I was wondering if there is anything I should do to prepare.

I would recommend skiing, running, swimming, hang gliding, taking a trip to Jamaica, traveling across America on a train, hiking the Appalachian Trail, cruising to Alaska, surviving Niagra Falls in a barrel, gambling at Las Vegas, golfing at Pebble Beach, writing a novel, starting a lawsuit against your neighbor and appearing on People's Court, or hitch hiking a ride on the Space Shuttle. Do anything you can to enjoy the last free six months you'll have in a while.

Quite honestly, the amount of reading you'd do on your own won't help. You'll do more in a week once Anatomy begins.

I only have one real recommendation. If you have a job and like to work, get in some over-time and make some extra money. Medical school is not cheap. Buy that new laptop now. Venture onto the Student Government website and find out which books you need to get started (although the offical list isn't out yet). You'll need money to move yourself and your things and pay for expenses for the first month because your loan check won't arrive for several weeks after classes start. Good Luck! :luck::luck::luck:

Enjoy your time off, tavel, work, do whatever you want to do. I just worked the summer before coming down because I needed to, and it kept me from being bored.

Before school starts they'll probably send out the book list and maybe some of the required reading for your first semester in PBL, but I don't know anyone who really did any reading/studying over the summer. Just be ready to jump into anatomy.

No real surprises here for me. Your first 10 weeks will be anatomy so it'll be a lot of lectures and lab time. And you'll slowly start PBL and it'll take time to get used to the "process" so don't worry if you get stressed and/or frustrated with it, I think everyone did at some point. There's nothing real technically hard in med school, it has a lot to do with the amount of material and being able to stay on top of stuff and manage your time well. seriously, if you can keep from getting behind in you reading and just keep on chugging through the material you'll be ok.

So I'd say just enjoy the time off.
